Humm whats the details on that car?

I had a 68 400 M/T car I sold about 4 yrs ago that was factory equipped with 8track
which was stolen out of it. I now have the correct 8 track but the car is long gone.
Could this be my old car?

That's cool. What would one have to pay for a setup like that if it could be found?

$250-400 for a core on ebay- they come up a few times a year.
$400-$500 to have it restored- not counting the wiring harness speakers, correct radio, speaker boxes, and grills. A completely restored system will set you back $1000-$1500.
This is only for the extemely anal-retentive restorers.
(yes, I bought one)

Default 1968 Firebird 8-track

Mine is a 68 Firebird 400 M/T dark blue(Aegena Blue?) convertible. If you still have the tape player but not the car, will you sell the tape player?

sorry not same car
mine was a 400 hardtop.
I added factory a/c to it.
8 track and the speakers were stolen
but they left the grilles laying on the front floorboards
I still have the grilles and kick panels from that car.
Im going to use the 8 track in one of my other 68s
but may have enough stuff to put an additional one together.
I think I need a drive motor or a controller. I bought new belts but it still
loads up.
Maybe these old tapes drag too much.

Just wondering out loud what the "system" Ive got would go for
AM/FM,stereo multiplex adapter,8 track with all speakers and wiring.
I have an NOS selector switch and I saw one sell on ebay for $500.
A buddy sold a similar 69 setup for about what you say a restored
67-8 8 track is worth.But 69 is a completely different animal.
I know I could buy a really nice sound system for what these are worth and
the fidelity left alot to be desired.

A LOT!
While it sounds counter intuitive, I have heard that most 8-tracks came with just the AM radio, as mine did. A 68 AM/Fm multiplex just by itself is probably worth $5-600 unrestored. A complete original system, speakers and all, would probably exceed $1500 considerably. The key, of course, is to find a buyer. It would have to be someone who not only has this rare system on their PHS, but also has a car that is rare enough to warrant such an expense- and they have to be anal enough to want it. (yes, its true that they would be paying $2k+ for a system that would sound terrible- it is purely for nostalgia)
If you are not in a hurry, I'd suggest being patient and finding the correct buyer.

67-8 Multiplex was dealer added only so no PHS.
The NOS switch I have for using same 4 speakers
for both the 8 track and the stereo AM/FM
has been know to bring well over $500 by itself.
AM/FMs WITHOUT the multiplex unit go for way
more than that.My 400 coupe had just an AM with the 8 track
too.67-8s are rarer and worth alot more for that reason
and the fact that most stuff fits a Camaro also.
Not fishing or looking to sell, just commenting that if I did
I could have one killer system in its place.

turns a mono radio into "stereo"
Thats pretty good money for a so so unit
but there are only a handful of these around.
I dont see the mounting brackets for the adapter.

I won't complain anymore when putting together a Stereo and 8 track combo into a GTO that cost's less than half what these things are pulling!

If it is consolation these were very pricey sound systems in their day, $400+ dollars back when a new car was only $2,500!!

yep thats why they are rare.
I went thru that era in those conditions
IMO 8 tracks sux saw many go out the window
with a tape streamer flying in the wind.
I was looking for a 67 for my Tempest Sprint
Ive got AM/FM reverb now but wanted an 8 track.
Last one I saw up for sale was $800 on ebay and didnt get a bid.
Maybe I should just sell off all the stereo stuff and pay off the
mortage
