Hi, had the same issue, orig can gear was worn, as was the dist gear. Found a new old stock SD cam, but ended up having to have a cam gear made. I'm in New Zealand and luckily had a local guy who specialised in engineering machinery gears, did a great job although wasn't cheap. Might be the only way to go or change for a stock 455 camshaft

Do you still have his info. I cant seem to find anyone willing to do anything. Everyone tells me to tear down the motor and go with a non SD cam and distributor.

Can do, although he will need the cam to match the gear and being in NZ, that might be a bit difficult. Maybe the way to go is a new cam and dist gear, Butler performance have a good selection, then when the SD cam is out, have an engineer take a look as the cam gear might be worn beyond repair which is what I found and not worth doing anyway. I was lucky I guess in finding the new SD cam so was worth me going down the track I did.

Thanks, I was hoping that he might still have the specs from yours and could use that to make me one.

Not sure it's quite that easy, my understanding is if the cam gear is worn (normally the case), then the dist gear will need to be made to suite, if the cam is to far gone then generally they are not reusable, if there is wear on the dist gear then there's a high probability that there is similar wear on the cam. One other option, I had 2 made, the first was usable but had just a fraction too much lash so we made a second, Happy to send it your way for what it cost me plus some freight. Either way, you will have to pull the cam from the engine to check it's condition, if you just replace the dist gear and they don't match then you could have a major failure on your hands. I get what your going through, my heart sank when i saw the condition of my cam, but a few $$$ will get you sorted either way. One last option, i'm looking to sell the complete running gear from a 74SD manual car (believe it was a Formula), W8 Engine (missing the carb and exhaust manifolds are a bit crap) but otherwise block and #16 heads are in really good shape, numbers matching Super T10, rear posi, Comes with new SD cam, Butlers rebuild kit, including .20 Ross pistons etc. (not the cheapest option), but will fix your cam issue).
Fixing these engines is all about good decisions as they are too rare to get it wrong, which generally means time and money. |

Thanks. My cam is brand new and never fired so hopefully your extra might work. How much would you want if you were to sell it?

Just talked to my engine guy, he seems to think it would be fine as long as it's matched with a new cam, he was just being over cautious. They cost me $645USD ($980NZD) to have made so say $300.00USD plus freight which i can find out the cost and let you know. If you can get an email address to me I can send some pics

HI,I have a distributor gear out of my 73 SD. Motor sat out of car from 1979 until apprx. 3 years ago when I sent it to Butler performance to do there magic. It is full roller now so I never used it. Light wear as would be expected but looks good.

I did purchase one but a spare could never hurt. How much are you asking?

I was only going to offer it as I thought it was needed. As you have already found one I will hang on to it. JEFF
