Default plastic steering box cover

hi, my 74 ta has a plastic cover over the steering box. I need to replace my return line, so I want to do some cleaning. is this cover removable and replaceable?. any help would be great. BLUE TA

Does it actually cover the rag joint and end of the box? That was a recall/assembly line addition to prevent a stone or debris from jamming the steering if it got wedged in between the steering rod and the subframe. It is held together by three or four tabs that snap into place on the adjacent side of the plastic.

thanks, njsteve. yes I think it covers the rag joint, cause I want to look at it also. so the snaps you speak of, are they on the bottom of the cover? thanks again for your input. BLUE TA

They are somwhere on the cover. Looks at it and feel around the circumference and you’ll find them. It’s not tricky. Unsnap them and it hinges open like a clamshell.

I never really noticed before how much that contraption looks like one of those black plastic toilet plungers... ;-)
