Just got the PHS in the mail today. Not sure what I am really looking at because there is no engine listed on the build sheet (1st page). The second page has the color, Goldenrod Yellow highlighted. The engine section has the line for 400 4 barrel V-8 premium fuel highlighted. But there is no upc code there. There is no highlighted line for the trans section either. I can scan the pages if I need to.
So what do you think? Now for the decisions. going to take it to a friends body shop on Monday for him to look at it to see exactly how bad it is.

Sounds like standard 400 4V/3-speed manual then. That was the base engine/trans on a Formula, so you would not see an engine or trans on the option list of the PHS invoice.

The RamAir3 engine was 158.61 option

What options does it list on Invoice ?
Safe-T-Track rear ?
Custom trim ?

To bring it back without a donor car would likely be extreme diminishing returns.
Someone in your region who might own a plain jane Fbird in good shape - might get interested if they would rather have a GRod Yellow Formula than a Sierra Yellow Bird.

A low option 70 Formula Blue-Blue Automatic with matching #s , clean body, nice interior recently sold for around 10-12k. To give an idea.

Just to sort of put this into perspective......They made around 7700 1970 Formula 400's.
Although it's NOT a Ram Air III,it IS a stick with gauges and NO A/C...which would likely make it the next most desireable.

In 1969,they built 19,000 Z28's (which are considered "rare" by the Bowtie crowd).....and there's likely 30,000 of them driving around today...as Chevrolet has NO PHS to document REAL ones...

If yours is not too rotten underneath...consider some rough-in body work to get it in primer...find a stock formula hood (they're out there...they made a TON of them) and a set of correct 1970 buckets with the wheels of your choice....I'll bet you will like it a whole lot better.....

Options include safe-t-track, formula wheel, gauge ta&cl, pwr steering, rally2 wheels pwr brakes, some others. But I am pretty sure I don't want to tackle another resto this deep. I know that I would like the car when finished, love it in fact. My 76 formy is the only auto car we have now. 69 mustang 302 3 spd. 71 mach 1 429 SCJ top loader so we really like a clutch pedal.
Even thought about making the 76 into a std car but that is a lot of work too.
Right now I'm leaning toward putting this engine into the truck since it is not original to the car and letting someone else make the decision whether or not to restore it?
Yea I KNOW that there are way more 69 Camaros on the street now than chevy made. They are on every corner.
Who wants a project? LOL

Sounds like a great 70 Formula.
Adding the Saf-T-Track was great.
Mine was peg-leg but still felt great.

Can you post a scan of the PHS?

Sounds like a nice car. If it's not too bad, you might consider selling the '76 and restoring it. But then I'm biased if favor of the earlier models.

Chevrolet fans now have www.chevymuscledocs.com to authenticate their cars. So they really did have the records. This will be interesting.

Wow - nicely optioned car. Rare to see one with those options (gauges, posi, Formula wheel, recessed wipers, Rally IIs, etc.) that didn't get one of the optional transmissions, too. I almost wonder if there wasn't some mistake made during order or build that surprised someone when it arrived at the dealer...

Was the dealer LANE-MOAK Pontiac?

That does have quite a few options for not getting the 4 speed also.

Especially getting the console and locking rear.
Possibly getting the HD air cleaner he thought he was getting more than what came in?

It would be nice to know what the customer was thinking when they ordered it.
Or maybe a male ordered it and had a female driver?

Yes it was Lane - Moak. I remember it being Paul Moak later.

Yes strange option list, But you never know what people are thinking. and then the dealer could have added some of that stuff just because, like the visor mirror.

Well, Had some other people look at it and it would need a donor car to make it worth it.
I have another Pontiac lover close so I plan to see if he would be interested in it. So unless somebody here wants to look into taking this project on I have found the drivetrain for my 55 gmc pickup.

Got a BOP TH400 yesterday at a pullapart. Also have another frame to put the stuff in while Dad does the body work.

Any body need some parts? Let me know, I'm sure we can work something out.

  • Muncie 3spd
  • shifter (you can keep the 'T' handle if you want, I only care about the specific/correct firebird stuff)
  • all linkage (including reverse rod; please say it's there because that's the ONE part I don't have; I expected that I'd have to make one)
  • reverse light switch (it's at the base of column)
  • bell housing (totally optional)

PM me if you might consider this, there is a receiver in Montana that it can be shipped to (to simplify things for you);
I'm currently on a road trip, and at this time I'm posting from Fort Bragg California, so I might not be able to message you back quickly.

as a point of comparison, my PHS shows the following option codes:
  • 401 RADIO P/B (AM)
  • 484 GAUGE-TA&CL
  • 494 CONSOLE
  • 501 PWR STRG-VAR
  • 502 POWER BRAKES
  • 521 MATS-FL-FRT
  • 522 MATS-FL-REAR
  • 752 ANTI-FREEZE
Both of our cars are "no option" engine and transmission cars;
Mine is also a "no option" wheel and tire car;
We are both 1:286 cars;
Yours is the only other M13 car that I have seen a PHS for;
Although I bought mine with a 12 bolt 3.55:1 posi, I would really like it if my car left the factory with it - so yours, has a small leg on mine ~ and both of ours are the brightest colours

For the record, I am sad to read that this car is getting parted out

I am still a few days away from making that decision, but It will need a donor car for the rear clip. I have a local guy that wants to come look at it. So maybe it has a chance still
