Default Door Sweep Quality

Guys, can I get your thoughts on these two door sweeps.

The one on the top is from Ames (brand is Catwhiskers) and the part the window rides on is a rubber hose with a thin layer of felt.

The bottom sweep has what looks to be a factory style felt, from Muscle Car Industries.

I feel like the one from Ames is cheap..

the ones pictured from ames look very cheap, that inner bead should be a felt pad like the original gm had.

i think i posted in your other thread on these sweeps... try the rock auto ons from fairchild, they are not perfect but ive had pretty good luck with them & the price is the best out there for these sweeps.

on GM & the rock auto ones, i did find a little tweaking of the screw holes was needed to get a good fit, i elongated some of the holes so they would sit down a little further on the door skin.

If GM is not available, the Fairchild sweeps are excellent, especially for the price. I bought a pair for $49

cool. glad you liked them. they used to be even cheaper just 1-2 years ago but i think they caught on to the fact everyone else was selling others of less quality for $100+/pr. they used to be like $16ea!

Is AMES dropping their crappy sweeps, and offering better alternatives?

It used to be when you called Ames and asked about quality or which the best X is, they would tell you the differences between the items they carried, and IF they didn't carry the 'best' one, they would tell you where to get the best one. Not so much anymore.

I still try to buy as much as possible that is sensible from Ames, in support of these forums, a Pontiac specific entity, and loyalty. But over time, it's becoming less that I buy, and see a drop from every project I do. It's disappointing and depressing.

On my Tempest, at the back of the quarter window, the sweep curls upward in a nice arc and finishes at the body. In looking at the pictures of what's currently offered, I don't see this kind of detail. They appear to be kind of bended but not shaped like the originals. Has anyone had any experience with this and do they look like the factory ones when you get them? Pics would be great.

I did the 'premium' ones listed in Ames catalog recently, on a 70-72 A- body, and the contour was pretty good. Required little 'adjustment', certainly better than I've had in the past. They look pretty good, and fine for what I'm doing.

They did have holes drilled in them, and the holes I believe were slots like the originals. The cheap ones you have to drill the holes. My only complaint is that it 'appeared' to me that the chrome piping was a hair too long at the rain gutter, but who knows, that may actually be they way they are supposed to be.

I don't recall exactly what the originals looked like, (I bought the car with @63k miles on it), but one thing I know is that I recall the ends being more 'finished', and not looking like someone cut them with a pair of side cutters.

I've had some before where no way were they going to follow the contour, and destroyed them installing. I remember at one point it taking several sets to get them to look even just 'decent'.

I can take some pics tonight when I get home if you want. Not sure if it will be a good comparison, if you have a diff year/body.
