Got the belt today and it measures exactly 15/32 using my machinists rule.
With that said, it actually rides about 1/8" high in the water pump pulley groove but looks good on the crank and ps pump pulleys. Further research required. My water pump and timing cover was changed at some point to an 11 bolt unit so who knows that the pulley came from.
I'll pull it off soon to check the part number. The good thing is that everything is quiet again. I dunno, it may wear down into the groove with some run time. I ran it for about 5 minutes tops.

Right, 9530. Frankly, the thinner belt worked fine for years so I may have created an issue where there really isn't one. I do know what the FSM calls for and the 9530 meets those specs..

Yeah, l just came back here to confirm.. My pulley is 3890419 CT... It's a Chevy pulley. Corvette keeps popping up in searches but probably any 64-69 Chevy.
Thanks Kenth, you're a wealth of knowledge.
Now, to source the correct pulley. Shouldn't be too tough.

Have the correct pulley on the way. Hard to believe that the wrong pulley has been on this car for probably 20 years.
Actually, now that I think about it, the PS and Alt. belts have always looked just a hair out of alignment with each other when viewed from the side.

I think I just gave away a set that would have worked for you ... from a 71 V8 with AC/PS.

1971 W/P pulleys have a deeper offset than the pulleys used on 1968 vehicles due to the longer snout on the 11-bolt W/P vs the 8-bolt.

Uh-oh.. now I'm thinkinging that I got the wrong pulley. I have an 11 bolt wp. Now I'm going to have two useless (to me) wp pulleys.

Kenth, when you get an opportunity, could you post the '69 and later pulley part number? I can't read it in the '69 Assembly Manual pages.

You know, I just thought about looking in there this afternoon and hadn't gotten around to it before time to leave for work. Thanks.
Looks like I'll have an extra '68 pulley to get rid of soon.. Man, I hate it when that happens. Buy something and realize you don't need it!
Thanks again all.

EDIT- Ok, what is "F/8 H.T. (M40) less V.P. fan"...? I think M40 is turbo-400 but the rest?

Searching the web, came up with this-
http://grandprixchapter.com/technica...-acc-brackets/
69-70 P/S & A/C – 9799130 (long snout pump) (2 groove for alt. and P/S.) 7 3/16″ diameter
If the above is accurate, it's the pulley that I need.
I think the long snout wp may have been a mid-year '69 deal and so the ones on the page listed by OG68, I think are still for the short pump.

Thank you. I have this figured out now. Got the useless (to me) pulley in the mail today and now looking for the correct one. Basically a 6-1/2" diameter, 2-3/4" deep, two groove wp pulley for a Pontiac. Part number 9799128 fits the bill.

Just got the gates 9530 ... it does ride a bit high in my original 68 pulleys. Tough to say without tension and running it in a few minutes.

Mine rides ok in the PS pump and crank pulley....maybe just a hair high in the crank but the noticeable error was in the wp pulley. Working on that now as I think I finally have the correct one coming. We'll see soon enough.

Greg, have you taken into consideration the crank pulley diameter? The diameter is different depending on if the car had A/C or not. To meet the increased cooling demands of the A/C, the crank pulley size was increased to 8" while the water pump pulley was decreased to 5 3/4" to speed up the water pump. I'm assuming you still have the original larger A/C crank pulley. Depending upon your new WP pulley, It may make a difference in your belt size as well as cooling performance. Analyze the charts provided and you can see the different pulley sizes for each configuration.

Yes, I read that somewhere earlier and I have not measured it but I believe that part is the original.
I think that what probably happened and what explains the Chevy wp pulley is that whenever someone changed the wp to the 11 bolt, 4.5" snout, they found that the original pulley no longer lined up. They dug up the Chevy pulley somewhere to get everything back aligned. The size works as far as diameter and depth but the pulley groove is more narrow. Because of that, when I replaced the belt with the correct one, it opened this can of worms when I noticed that the wider belt was sitting too high in the wp groove but ok everywhere else.
I will measure the crank pulley. If it's the wrong one, I'll replace that one too.
