Model train enthusiasts
A good friend has passed and he has a large collection. Many of these are still in the boxes. I don't know much about them but he would tell me how he would search just for the ones he wanted.
His wife came up with around 30k in receipts, the local hobby shop is offering 5k. Lots of track, buildings, mountains, people, etc. If there are any one out there that is interested, I can get plenty of pictures of the collection.

I know nothing about model trains, but you can be sure if the hobby shop is offering 5K than they are worth at least 15K.

There are multiple forums available to get advice from. I went to a train show several years ago to get some track for my set I had as a kid. I set it up at Christmas time.

You may want to add what gauge train collection it is...I.E Ho, O, N, That may spark some interest if a collector on here finds out it is the gauge he or she collects.
I have had some "N" gauge stuff since the 70's but it is all boxed in the attic! God Bless Bill https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...closed.614419/

You can put it on Craigslist- my dad once bought an entire collection that way. Depends how much time the $$ is worth.

Hobby shops offer a fraction of worth and for good reason. They tend to sit on a lot of that stuff for years. Seems that's the case with all kinds of "collectibles". Our generation likes that stuff but it's a dying hobby IMO. I still have a ton of Lionel stuff from the 40's-60's and not many have interest.

A 5K offer for receipted items of 30K is probably a very good offer. Sadly.
I have a friend here who is deeply involved in the model train hobby. All HO stuff. He buys and sells the stuff constantly. I think you will find the hobby shop will only want what they can break up such as rolling stock, houses & rails etc. Large displays with mountains and other scenery are nothing but a nuisance so they dump them hollus bollus. Perhaps if you could advertise the whole collection as a whole, someone might come and buy the lot. There are plenty of people who either don't have the time or the skills to create their own layout so a single sale as a ready-to-go is ideal. My mate has asked me several times to assist him buying whole layouts. He then usually sells the whole setup as a going operation or he simply breaks it all down, keeps the small saleable items and dumps the rest. I can attest to the fact that one layout, he bought it, sold it, bought it back and resold it a third time. People buy them for their kids, the kids grow out of the interest and the parent wants it gone. One point I can say for sure is anything in its original box is worth triple for something with no box. Good luck with it

Maybe find someone that will ebay them all for you ... and you give them a cut of the proceeds.

Dying hobby for sure. I've been selling my dad's HO stuff for several years now and there isn't big money in it. Try the https://www.modeltrainforum.com/

A couple of people here have expressed interest in either helping to sell or to buy.
I sent you a message here with my phone number. Please provide if you are looking for a particular train or trains, or the complete collection. That way I can get the pictures.

I sold all of my HO stuff about 8 years ago now I guess. It sold very quickly to a single collector. It was only a few hundred dollars worth though. I advertised it on C'list.
It's a good hobby but it does take up a lot of room, and unlike a car in the garage, it's kind of permanently in the way.

I hope these are clear enough to get an idea of what he has. As far as I can tell he kept all the original boxes and many still in the box probably never used.
