Default 57 hydro replacement w 58-60 version?

What issues are there replacing a 57 dc hydro with a later 58-60 version of the same trans (dc)? Thx in advance for any feedback.

The 58 is a much better transmission and still has a rear pump. The output splines are different. 59 has no rear pump. 60 has a smaller case and the linkage is different.

Then there are rear motor mounts to consider. 58 still had the rear motor mounts on each side of the front transmission housing. 59 and later did not. I don't know if the 58 mounts are in the same position as 57. I believe 57 and 58 did use slightly different rear motor mounts.

Can you catch it in gear and start it since its a rear pump unit? Some automatic transmission cars can be started buy "catching them in gear".. I had a 62 Ford Galaxie two speed and a 65 Rambler three speed that I could catch in gear if needed..

Yes, tow-starting is the reason for the Hydramatic having a rear pump.
