I get a noise out of the rear end of the car when it's moving, is there a difference in gears made by chevy and BOP cars?
I have a 10 bolt rear, I know the gears have been changed to a lower gear, could that wrong make of gear cause the noise? is there any way of knowing the factory gear size?
Thanks for any help.

while some gearsets are naturally noisy, my guess is whoever set the rear end up missed the lash....may or may not be able to fix (my guess, probably not, since they have been run awhile)...need to take it to a knowledgeable mech, or lots of good info here...do a search

Have you checked to see if the gear lube is full?

A bad axle bearing will have a whirring-whining noise.

How do I tell the gear ratio with out taking the cover off? I know there is a way where you raise the back end and turn the wheels. any one know this method? and how do I tell it by opening the cover? just to know it.

I think you can get close by counting the number of times the drive shaft turns to one full revolution of the tire.....knew a guy with a 70 ss chebby, sounded like a garbage truck in reverse when he had that thing in first gear going forward, turns out the whining was coming from his healthy muncie rock crusher tranny.

thought I was wrong once.......but I was mistakin

Jo,
What year of 8.2 Pontiac rearend is it? Trying to rule out axle bearing noise, as never heard any noise out of sealed bearing A-9 axle bearings.

How many miles since the gear change? Is noise on the drive or on the coast, or both.

OPH it is both drive and coast, I am gonna try to ID the unit to see exactly what rear end is in it. the gear change was probably 3000 miles or less. I will get back with some info and you can give me your opinion.

OPH - I've never heard of it either until one went bad on my wife's '69. Wish I had a digital camera to show the remains of the bearing! Amazingly enough, all that carnage, and it didn't hurt the axle.

"is there a difference in gears made by chevy and BOP cars?"

Yes, there is a difference. BOP gears will not work on a chevy posi unit or the other way around. 1968 GTO
