A G8 with a V6
Anyone have one of these? Thought about buying one as I already have two big V8 cars (69 GTO and 72 Formula 400. which will soon be stroked to a 475 hp 455). How do they run?

Well I don't own one, but I did test drive one before buying our G8GT, In comparesion to my Wife's 99 GTP it seemed to lack low end, but it did feel strong on a mid range run up a freeway onramp. One thing we considered was MPG, and there really wasn't much to chose from. If you do mostly city driving you will probebly get better MPG with the V-6, but the 6.0 and 6.2 V-8's have a 6-speed trans (compared to the 5-speed on the V-6) and the V-8's also drop cylinders at highway speed to increase MPG. So the highway MPG is about the same. Also the insurance costs was only $32.00 a year cheaper for the V-6. And at the time the purchase price for our Stripper GT and a loaded V-6 sedan was basicly the same. So we decided to go with the 6.0 liter V-8 GT.
One thing to consider also if you decide on a GT or GTP they do not come with spare tires or the jacking tools. The V-6 cars do come with them. So for piece of mind I ended up buying a 10,000 mile full size wheel and tire (yes a full size wheel fits in the spare tire well) and the stock jack/wheel changing kit from a vender. both cost me under $400.00 total.
Either way you will probebly really enjoy the car if you buy one. We love ours, and so far the only issue we have had was the onstar back up battery failed, and was replaced free of charge.

I do own a V6 version G8 and it's been a great car so far. Came with every option available except the V8 of course. I've also owned a Grand Prix GTP and I must say I would rate the G8 as fast in the mid to high end and it's no slouch in the low end either. Also, it runs on regular gas - not premium like the GTP. It does also corner like you wouldn't believe. I purchased a V6 mostly for the gas mileage and mostly city driving. If you can get a good deal on one you won't be disappointed. Sure, a V8 would be nice but then it all depends on what your application is. The V8's come in 6 & 6.2 (GXP) litre engines and have of course all kinds of power enhancements available - they are basically a 4 door 'Vette. I have my '69 GTO and my Hemi Dodge RAM if I really need a power fix. Good Luck!

I'll wait until the prices drop a little more. I'm amazed at how dealers have used G8's priced close to new ones. I would only buy a V6 one. Have my power fix already taken care of.

What MPG are you averaging with the V-6? We do mostly highway driving, and we are averaging 25.3 MPG with the 6.0 V-8. I does handle fantastic, and the 6.0 also runs on regular. We only averaged 23.6 MPG with the 99 GTP.

Hi camerjeff,
I can't tell you my gas mileage exactly as I only have 2200 miles on the car and have only had it out on the highway once. I am estimating close to 35 mpg on the highway based on the distance I travelled and gas used. My buddy also has a 2009 G8 V6 and he is getting 34 to 35 mpg on the highway and I believe 24 to 25 mpg in the city. The only mods we have on our cars so far is we both have the replacement K&N Air Filter.
Remember though: 1 Canadian (Imperial) Gallon = 1.2 U.S. Gallons.

How about the idea of buying the V6 and putting a G8 6.0 powertrain? I have thought of doing this down the road. But don't know enough about the emissions and parts compliance. Any thoughts?

I have a G8 V6 (2009). Average 24.7 mpg with about 50% highway miles. I've seen 28 mpg on a long drive at 75 mph, and over 30 on 55 mph roads. Never less than 20 in town. Bought it instead of the V8 because I needed a car and the price was right. Couldn't find a V8 car at the time without tons of options, so the price difference was more substantial that it should have been. I love the car, and so does the wife. Handles great, rides smooth and quiet, can carry 5 adults. I can spend all day in it and not get tired of driving. Sure, it would be more fun with the V8, but then I wouldn't be able to keep my foot out of it and would probably just burn more gas & tires. That's what the '66 GTO is for.
I don't think anyone could financially justify swapping a V8 into a V6 car. It would be much cheaper (and no swap work) to just sell it and buy a V8 car instead.

Just remember in 25 years the V6 cars will be as collectible as the Cammers are today ;-)
My wife has the V6 in her 04 Bonneville and I have never felt it lacking in power.

Jeff
sons 97 GTP still gets 25 in town and 35 hiway only.
add to that it was doing high 12s in 1/4 and thats hard to beat.
But hes ready to give up on it due to 5 transmissions.
My 99GTP got around 28 combined driving(no mods only a filter)
