I am restoring my 1970 GTO and I have been the orginal owner of the vehicle. It is about 3/4 complete. The other day, I was putting gas into the tank and noticed the fill tube was shorter than the original tank. I also noticed that there were 2 rubber vent hoses not attached to the tanks fill tube which does not have connections as the old tank had.

My questions:

1. Do these hoses have to be attached?
2. Does this pose a safety hazzard?
3. How can I put hose attachments in the fill tube?

Thanks,

Crabmaned

Having bought a new tank for my 70 I know there was a choice of 3 different tanks, the differences being what you have found, different venting setups in each. Not sure what you can do to make yours work for you though. I wouldnt have thought it would have different length fill tubes though, did you buy this new for a 70 GTO?

Thanks for the info. I a guy who is doing most of the retoration for me bought this new tank. I think it is an after market tank. Original GTO parts are becoming very scarce.

that "vent" hose should be attached to a tube that is welded to the filler neck of the gas tank. it "vents" out through a metal loop and grommet that is mounted at the rear of the trunk floor by the trunk lower latch, there is also a vent tube at the rear of the gas tank that "vents" out too. Both of these vent into the atmosphere, this is the last year of the "open" system.

forgot to mention, if it was(built in) a califonia car it will not have these vent tubes! will be the same as 71 and 72, closed system

If the filler neck is shorter, it sounds like you may have mistakenly gotten a Chevelle tank instead. This could explain some of the vent tubes also.
