I use 4 quartz 10/30 Valvoline, and 1 quart of 5/30 Mobil 1 the advantages of both for summer and winter. BUT I live in SoCal, not much of a winter.

I'm a little shocked that synthetic isn't winning by a landslide. I know someone who used to run super stock and claims to have seen extra hp (5-10) on the dyno with a simple oil change from conventional to synthetic. I know someone else that has seen a 2 mpg increase by switching to AmsOil. I can show you an engine right now with over 200k that used synthetic for at least 150k of those miles and is still super clean inside even though it only got changed once a year.
The increase in power and better fuel economy is obviously a result of less friction. Less friction will equal longevity. There is no downside. I've used AmsOil in every vehicle I've owned over the past 15+ years....street and race, flat tappet and roller cams. And yes, I've compare it to conventional oils. I can't find any reason to run anything else.

Not the first time I've heard this. Why not synthetic for flat tappet? I've done it numerous times.

Just curious about this myself. I would think the rollers wouldn't need the "higher quality" oil since they roll over the cam not rub. Is it the higher spring pressure on the roller? I'm no chemist so I'm just assuming the synthetic is the better overall oil. What is it in the properties of the two that would make one better for flat tappet vs. roller?

Thanks,

Used to run conventional Castrol GTX 10W30 in everthing with zero issues. I now run synthetic
Mobil1 10W30 in everything with zero issues.

I don't know if this is the right answer, but I guess I've always kind of looked at things the other way with an old car with a carb. I figure unless your engine is tuned perfectly chances are you have unspent fuel or combustion byproducts polluting your oil, so why not use a conventional oil and change every 1500 miles or so?
