Default Firewall hole?

Hi all, After too many years I’m trying to finish my wife’s 65 convertible.

I can’t figure out what this hole is for. Can anybody help me out?

Nope, it’s right below it under that kick panel vent cable.

I don’t know what the heck it’s for. This car has sat forever & my documentation of things was suboptimal.
Thanks

That hole is for a rubber grommet that allowed the passage of accessory wires/cables,etc. to run into the engine compartment. The hole portion of the grommet had a thin membrane molded in to keep out the elements but was easily punctured to pass the wire.

Per the MPC it is known as Grommet, accessory wire—group 2.482 however I couldn’t find a part number. I remember seeing these listed in some of parts supplier catalogs but don’t recall if they fit the 65.

Good pic Pete...the 65 looks unique to that year...my 64 grommet is rectangular and the later years have flat front...

Thanks Deuces!

Peter, that pic really helps! What’s the wire running through it on that car for? Also what is that relay looking thing above the firewall connector?

I’ve ordered a wiring diagram. I hope it helps me out. I’ve had this car torn apart way too long. I had pics on my computer, which died. I took the hard drive to a shop & it fried one of their computers & no pics for me.

This is becoming quite a challenge. I’ve had some heart issue the last several years & I think I’ve lost some brain cells!

Thanks again for all your help!

Accessory wire hooded grommet.

Both my 65 and 66 have this same hooded round grommet.

My 66 has the “under hood light wire” coming through it.

Chris.

If your wife's 65 has a manual transmission the wire harness, for the back up lights, goes to the back up light switch located on the transmission. This harness is separate from the headlight, and, engine harness. It was also used, as stated, for other electrical accessories. On my 65 hardtop the back up light harness for the switch goes through this grommet. Hope this helps, Good luck.

Sure does! Thanks, car was originally auto trans. As I’ve thought about it, I seem to remove a grommet with nothing going through it. I’m gonna have to do some more parts searching.

Thanks again
