Brake lights
66 GTO, brake lights work when running and also when key is in the acc position. If the key is not in the ignition should the brake lights work when the pedal is pressed. And if they are supposed to work what could be the problem if they don't work. Again they work when running, when in the acc and in the run position.

Your car is good, no brake lights when the car is off, unlike newer cars.

The brake lights should work all the time . With or without the key on. It's a safety feature. You have some wiring wrong. somewhere.

The brake switch is a "dead man's switch:" the switch is always pushed in until you let off the brake - then the lights will go on. No power to the switch until you turn the key to on. I know it's that way on '65s and '66s.

Ditto that. The brake light circuit has a constant 12v going to it.

Brake lights should be hot at all times.

Starting with the 1967 model year the feds required the brake lights to come on no matter what position the key was in. Up to, and, including 1966 the brake lights, on most GM cars, only came on with the key in the ACC or run position. The brake lights on my 65 do not come on when the key is off. Only in ACC or run. I would say that the brake lights on your 66 are acting normally.Hope this helps.
