Default Intake Manifold Bolts

What do you guys do for the 1 1/4" bolts for the intake manifold? There are 10 of them on the '65 and up intakes.

I've noticed you can buy grade 2 low carbon 3/8-16 X 1 1/4" hex bolts, but grade 5 and grade 8 are only available 1" and 1 1/2".

Also, Pontiac used odd lengths on the water pumps. Any tips on how to find these 5/16 and 3/8" bolts?

I have a few left from years of working on Pontiac engines, but the supply is running very low.

Also, how about the thick 3/8" flat washers used on the intake bolts? Any sources?

Dick,

I've used internal wrenching bolts(Allen head...stronger than Grade 8) along with ARP thick washers. It worked for me.

Header bolts make nice intake bolts.

If you have a Fastenal nearby they'll have them, and usually Home Depot and Lowe's have 1.25" long bolts. It sounds bad to say, but the parts store around are usually about the worst place to get bolts! -lol

I get a lot of my fasteners at Ace/TruValue hardware. Great selection.

The thick 3/8" bolts are still available. I ended up purchasing a box of 100 Cad plated washers a couple years ago. Definitely a lifetime supply, but worth it.

You can go to the Grainger site and order them also, a tad expensive though!

If you have a Menard's store near you they have 3/8-16x1 1/4 grade 8 bolts. Go to their site and type this SKU in the search box: 2326533. Hope this helps.

McMaster-Carr out of Chicago has a lot of odd bolts available. Not always cheap but good delivery. I've ordered online in mid afternoon and had the stuff on my front step by 10 AM the next day.

I use Allen head bolts I bought at Home Depot. There are at least 2 locations on my P4B-QJ that a standard hex head will fit but can't effectively be tightened up. Any washer in those locations requires grinding a flat side.

Both my 73 engines had the later style Intake bolts with integrated washers. They are
crap, and many had the heads so corroded they could not be re-used and were
difficult to remove. I always prefer and use the early thick Head separate washer
intake Bolts (65 and 66 are the best) After 40 years many still look like new and
retain their plating. I'm sure you can get the Bolts from McMaster Car, Grainger
and the like, but the old Pontiac Bolts if you can find them are by far the best, and
I would add that Pontiac in general used excellent hardware on their engines. The
Head Bolts, Main Cap, and may other bolts are better than anything out there, and
yes I prefer them over any aftermarket type including ARP. Keep in mind I'm both
old and old school. I was also lucky because I had a pretty much unlimited supply
from a local J-Yard with a bunch of old ponchos. The J-Yard's gone now, but I never
had a problem finding any original bolt I needed. I became a bit of a nut about this
and when I needed the Original Engine Mount to Block Bolts, had to go through
4 or 5 Cars to find six that were accessible laying in the weeds. Send me a PM, I may
even have some 66 intake bolts left in my special hardware Box.

I bought a set of "correct style" intake manifold bolt set 65-68 from Ames PN N178NBA. Came with the washers $20. Page 203 of the catalog.

Do you have to use the thick washers? I'm using stainless bolts and want to use stainless washers but they are not as thick.?Im trying to avoid the rusty washer look. I painted them but they scratch and chip when torquing the bolts. I was going to just double up the stainless washers if thicker is needed. Is there a need for thick flat washers and should I use lick washers?

Done (with) the allen head stainless...

As Dick suggests, there is a need
for factory original bolts with the built-in thick or thin washer. I'd like a spare set too.

Too true about the parts stores. The old time parts houses usually had the "good" stuff with bolts, studs, washers (thick, thin, fender, std), round head phillips screws (for interior stuff), etc, etc. The counter with the long stand of catalogs, the car fragrance, and obsolete parts in the back, etc. The franchises just aren't the same. Irony is going to Home Depot, Lowes, etc to get what we need.

Go to Ace Hardware. They have all grades and finishes (stainless, oxide and yellow zinc. I used their stainless and washers on mine, They also have OEM looking flanged bolts with no washers required.
