Hey guys,
I ran across an OHC cam cover/housing while rummaging through a nearby junkyard. The cam and timing gear are still in it, but frozon in place. I was just wondering if this thing is salvage-able and/or worth grabbing next time I go. I have no idea what the operator there would ask for it if I was to buy it. The cam is frozen in place pretty good. Any of you guys think it's worth the trouble to get? If so, what mught the value be in such a part? Are they hard to come by? Any interest? Thanks, Kevin |

I would not pay more than scrap value for it. With the radiator spacer nipple it may be a 230 vintage tower. The cam itself should have a split between the lobes in the shaft from over revving and blowing it. If you can get it out you might ( I say this very loosely) be able to save the housing. The gear/radiator nipple/neck might be worth total $50 on ebay.
If he'll sell for nothing I would buy it just to hang on the wall after a repaint.

I think any of us that have been messing with OHCs has a stack;
and all the over priced ones on ebay.

I have a pile of these that I have rejected either for gouges in the fins or the biggest problem I find that is the water jacket by the thermostat housing is corroded and leaking into the oil

Hey thanks everyone. I guess I'll leave her be then. we spotted it lying out next to some other cars we were playing with and I thought about you guys. It's not really about making any dough off the part, but more about getting something you don't see every day out to the guys working on these engines. I may try to grab that radiator neck and spacer next time I go, but from what you've all said, it sounds like the cover is not worth the trouble. I was unable to find the car it came from. This thing was just sitting out when we found it. Would have been interesting to see the car too.
Thanks for the info! Kevin |
