Default cam degree

Is it possible to degree a cam without the profession crankshaft turning tool as shown below? If yes, how is it performed? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXuATjw4LQ8

I have a degree wheel, pointer, magnetic base & indicator, piston stop and Pontiac crankshaft bolt.

A crank socket is cheap.

If the flexplate/flywheel is installed you can use one of those tools that grab on the teeth to turn the crank...

I have a couple of "professional" style (Large Diameter degree wheel) tools.

One, I made using a degree wheel of flat steel 14" in diameter that bolts to a factory
Pontiac Harmonic Balancer "Hub". Install the hub, install the Crank 15/16" socket bolt,
and then zero the degree wheel by moving the wheel (with slots) that align with the Factory balancer pulley bolt pattern. Eack slot allows about 40 degrees of movement.

The second Degree Wheel system was purchased from a well known Automotive Racing Tools supplier. It has an even larger wheel and a hub that allows rotating the wheel anywhere in a 360 degree circle. Everything is billet aluminum except for the Hub itself.

Speed your money on good stuff of a large diameter. Accuracy in degreeing cams will be much higher. Make or buy a good piston stop tool too.

The answer to the question is yes. I have done it via rotating the flexplate as was mentioned. It was a real PITA. I bought one to set up my engine up to TDC for distributor install (and for next cam install). Far easier to rotate the engine in either direction.

thanks, here is the degree wheel I have. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g1057-16 If I had known all the required tools for this job up front I would have never started it.

Tooski nailed it. I just did this today. It would have been nice with that tool but...it still worked out.

Tighten the crank nut down tight, then use a socket. Is not going to loosen with the spark plugs out.

Degreeing the cam with JUST #1 piston/rod installed also makes it a bit easier to turn.

The crank nut tool is a godsend to do this with.

I have the Comp Cams kit and it came with one. You can probably buy it separately from them.

This.

I have also just used a big crescent wrench on the crank snout with the crank key installed. Gotta be careful not to damage the key though. Easier on engines with viton vs. rope crank seals.

This is a disaster waiting to happen.

Yeah, I can see that. I guess I got lucky.

At least I knew what the potential hazard was and could be careful about it.

But, putting a crank bolt in the snout works fine and is a much better way to do it if you don't have one of those crank sockets.

That crank socket looks like the Comp one. I have one with a wheel for Pontiacs and one for SBC that I used on the 409(they have a SBC snout just the keyway is different spot) That way once I get it cranked down tight on the wheel I don't have to worry next time if it was tight.

The trick with the crank bolts is to add some thick washers to it to take up the thickness of the balancer keeps guyss from bottoming out the bolt and screwing up the threads.
