Default Aluminum Heads

I’m doing a 455 Street build and looking for advice on which out of the box heads members on here prefer/recommend.

Edelbrock 87cc d port
Or
KRE 85cc d port

I am running the as cast KRE D ports on my +.030 455. I've been running these since summer of 2016. The only issue I've had with the swap was a rocker arm nut backing off on the set of comp magnum roller tip rockers I re-used from the iron heads I replaced. Went to a set of HS rockers with poly locks and the car has been dead reliable since.

I bolted the heads on, as received directly from Kauffman Racing.

Only complaints I've seen, and this is whether it matters to you or not.

Edlebrocks use helicoils in the bolt holes for more strength and KRE is just tapped aluminum.

Not a deal breaker in my eyes but it bothers some people. Been a while since I've seen a set of KRE's though, so that issue may have changed.....

In regards to running out of the box D ports I would go with Edelbrock.

Do not use the Edelbrocks "OUT OF THE BOX" The valve guides are very likely to tight. At least have a shop check them. This hopefully could save issues later.

I believe Paul has had to repair at least one set of KREs with helicoils due to studs pulling out

Im running out of the box edelbrock 72cc round ports. I had Butler set them up for the propper valve lift for my engine (.618/.623). Overall I'm very happy with the heads

I used a set of out of the box KRE's in my '65 GTO, went a best of 7.15 in the 1/8 on 87 octane gas. Had no issues with them at all.

Originally put 87 cc round port out of the box edelbrocks on my 467 and ran them hard for 15 years. No problems at all. Last time around had Butler do some porting with other engine mods (45 iron block) and have been real happy still.

Lots of variables, but our club dyno days seems to show the as-cast D-port Edelbrocks making a little more horsepower than the Kaufman's. We also saw that stepping up to even the first level of porting with either head really kicks up the horsepower and levels the playing field between the two where it's more of a coin flip on which head comes out on top.

I put out of the box Edelbrock 72cc D ports on my 400 w/ a VooDoo 703 & RA manifolds, very happy with them, no issues at all.

When I thought about aftermarket aluminum heads the only one available were E-heads. I would have needed a new set of headers at 3-4 times the cost of the ones I already had. So when KRE D ports arrived I jumped. Now, good exhaust manifolds for either are about the same. If I ever do another I would consider the E's or Speedmaster (If they can be had).
