65 Gas cap?
Is this the correct cap for a 65 GTO? I was told it is not. The previous owner said it was.
Thanks, Dave |

That's the exact same cap as three original '65 Lemans GTO cars I know of. That ones in nice looking condition.

Not a 64 Lemans/GTO cap, they look like this (with the Tabs "Wings").
Do not know how long the "65" style cap was used. Tom V.

My plan is to buy a very good or NOS incorrect one that the judges consider correct just for next time. Not a slight to the judges, that's what they claim and those poor guys were exhausted from judging from about 8a.m. to maybe 8p.m.

I’m very sure it depends on the build date and possible plant (early verses late build). What is the plant build and date on your 65 (Data plate)? Chris.

I'm restoring my original 1965 convertible built in Fremont, CA plant and it has this same gas cap. Build date is July 28, 1965.

Dave,
I’m 99% sure your gas cap is correct for your GTO. It falls in line with my research using low mileage Survivor cars. Yes, I’m aware that a Dealer, Garage, or even the Original owner could have changed the cap at some point, but I doubt it. It seems roughly the 1st quarter of 1965 used a Stant cap with ears and the last 3 quarters of 65 and into 1966 used the cap without ears (flat) as you show in the first post. NYGTO, Gary should not have lost a point as he has the Original correct cap on his Survivor GTO. I’ll show build date / plant build / cap. 11A / BAL / eared cap, my car. 12B / BAL / flat cap, Dave’s car. 12E / BAL / flat cap, Roger’s car (26,000 mile car). First two pics are my car. Last three pics is Roger’s car.

A couple more examples using Survivor cars which came with the flat cap.
This flat cap was a “NOT VENTED” cap. 03B / PON / flat cap (15,000 mile car). 01B / BF / flat cap, my 1966 Survivor. First three photos are the 15,000 mile car. Last two photos is my 66. Chris.

Anyone have a lockable cap? My car came with a loose lockable cap. I replaced it with the wing type standard cap because of fuel sloshing out the tank on heavy acceleration.
Not a great design to have the filler that low, below the license plate on '65s. Even with the better seal of the standard cap, the fuel still escapes out the back filler. |

'63-64 had much better design with a fuel door higher up on the rear panel. Unsure if they moved it below the license plate to save cost, or to have the one single continuous rear trim piece. Probably both.

Interesting that the stamped date of the first bumper is 4-11 (I wonder if it was loaded backwards and should have been 11-4) and the date of the other is 12-7.

Your pic looks exactly like my car, burgundy/parchment. Yes, non-vented cap with seal, and hose from the elbow fitting on the filler tube goes up. Can't remember where to. Fuel probably coming out the cap.
