I haven't updated this in a while.

I got my heads on today and measured pushrod length. I used my air compressor to hold the valve closed on #1 cylinder.

I noticed that my exhaust valve seat was leaking air through the exhaust port. I could feel and hear the air come out through the exhaust.

I checked the other 7 cylinders and none were leaking through either the intake or the exhaust.

I've been told this is normal, and that valves will seat after startup.

Is this common?

Do you have the valve springs on it ? If so, use a mallet and pop the valve. If it won't seal, call the machinist. Don't wait until it's too late.

Yes, the regular (not checking springs) were installed. That is how I found out, by chaning the springs after checking pushrod length and using an air compressor to hold the valve closed.

Yes, I used a mallet, and when pressurized, I would strike the valve and it would pop loudly showing a lot of air is in there. But, I can put my hand under the exhaust port and feel air pass out.

I contacted the machinist, and he said this is normal. The valves will seat when the engine runs the first time. I believe him, he really knows his s**t, but the other 15 valves seal, so it gives me something new to worry about.

You are diligent and right to be concerned. I've NEVER seen a new valve job that needed to be popped. I've always used grinding stones on the valve jobs I did, but most machine shops use cutter bits and sometimes leave a metal curl/gouge on the valve seat under rare conditions but it happened to me too on one valve seat on some heads I had the valves enlarged/ported.

I would NOT take it back as he will likely put the cutter on it again and take away more valve seat (not good).

IF that is what happened, it will probably eventually seat but for your own peace of mind, make sure that's all it is and fix it yourself.

I would remove that head, hand lap that one valve seat and start over. I would re-use the head gasket 100% no worries. It's no different than a re-torque.

You can do a leak down test and judge exactly how much is coming out of that valve. more than 5% yeah you probably want to pull the head off, pull valve out and use some like layout fluid dykem or sharpie marker to see exactly how the valve is sitting on the seat face. If it's minor you can just lap it out at home and put it back together.

I spoke to Butler, and they reaffirmed what my machinist said. That the valves typically seat / seal a few miles after start up.

I will rent a leak down kit and do a test, then go from there. Yes, something to worry about.

On another subject, do you guys think I can install my Ram Air Resto manifolds on the engine off the car, and the engine will fit in the '65 GTO?

As to the manifolds...Maybe. They actually go on afterwards pretty easily and it's nice to have the extra room while installing the engine.
