You won't find a new one. I found a used one on E bay for $200.00 that was in really nice condition. You will need to find a used one. Good luck.

Thanks for the info . That is the same thing that I am running in to . I have the correct posi carrier that takes a 3.23 and I would like to upgrade from my current 3.08 .The other choice that I would have would be to go with a 3.36 but that would require getting a different carrier and gear set . I'd rather not go that route. Thanks again for your help . Don

I don't know what your goals are for this vehicle, but swapping for a 3.08 to a 3.23 will be less than 5% change - you probably won't even notice the difference once you spend the money and time to do the gear swap for street driving. I originally had 3.23's in my GTO (no posi), found a 3.36 (posi) rear and installed that. When the 8.2 rear went south I replaced it with a 12 bolt with 3.42's and a few years ago replaced the 3.42's for a set of 3.08's as I've been spending more time driving longer distances at highway speed. I felt no difference in perceived acceleration going from 3.23's to 3.36 to 3.42 in street driving. There was a small difference going from 3.42's to 3.08's, but well I had the 3.42's in I also swapped from the original 389 to a 455 - so have plenty of torque to handle the change in gears. It's your car and your money, do what you want. |

The late Pontiac 8.2 gear sets began showing up in late '69 production, their ring gear bolts are LH thread & 1/16" larger diam threads. It is easiest if you get the correct Pontiac 8.2 gearset, versus having to have an early Pontiac 8.2's carrier's ring gear mtg flange holes opened up to mate with the late style Pontiac 8.2 ring gear, or have to install thin brass bushings in the ring gear mounting flange of a later 8.2 PONTIAC carrier to use the early ring & pinion. Have had to do both in previous builds.

Hi Champ , I'm running a 66 Tempest conv't with an OHC Sprint engine and a HD 3 Speed stick . My goal is to make it a little easier on the clutch when starting from a standstill going up hills without sacrificing too much gas mileage, We live in the mountain side of VA , so we're either fighting with the hills or cruising the interstate at 75 MPH . Thanks for your reply and advice . Don
