Is there a way to type a division symbol (a hyphen with a dot above and below it)? when posting on these forums?

For my computer (laptop, no number keypad), I go to start menu, all programs, accessories, system tools, character map. Select "Tunga" font, and copy the division symbol. Paste into text. Seeing if it copied right now...

÷

÷ Have num lock on. Press and hold alt while typing 246 on the number keys to the right on the keyboard. Not the numbers at the top of the keyboard.

÷ it will not appear until you release the alt key after typing 246 on the number keypad. While typing nothing will show.

Using the left ALT key?
(shouldn't matter, but sometimes works)

If that doesn't work, you have a program that redirects that combo to something else.

Try ALT 167 and see if it's the º

Yes John, left ALT key. It appears that holding ALT down and typing any digit takes me out of the forums.
I use GoogleChrome.

I'm not very good with computers, so I can't help, but I am curious as to where it takes you when it takes you out of the forums.

Your laptop a Windows machine?
(figure it is)

Should be able to go to Windows character map of characters - charmap.
(Windows key button by the ALT key may bring up a list having it in it)

Wonder what that keystrokes do when in a text editor?
Still kick you to the browser?

If so, possibly Google Chrome is taking over the ALT key commands?
If not, don't have a clue.

Typing is hard. Copy and paste is easy.

Want an umlaut? Have two: Mötley Crüe.
32°C. 2¢. 10,000¥. ¼ mile. ¾ race (LOL)

But you gotta fnd them again later, so it's never easy.

That's true.
I even have pages of the characters. But as you said, when I need them, I have to find them.

I also use the (different) codes for the html in web pages.

Here's a good page that has a lot of them:

Alt Codes

99¢

Hey, it worked. Downloaded Unicode to my Chromebook. To make a cent sign you hold down the shift & ctrl keys & hit u, then hit 00a2. When you hit the space bar, the cent sign will appear.

00f7 will get you the division sign. ÷ 6¢ ÷ 3 = 2¢

That's my 2¢ worth.
