judging by the number of stake marks, the engine has been rebuilt many times and they just ran out of room for more staking.

Reminds me of hot rodding in the earliest days...fix it with what you have on hand. You don't likely have enough $$$ to get to town, let alone buy something to fix it.....

Reminds me of a guy I know who lost the fan studs out of the old waterpump on his Chevy 350 he was building. Time came to button it up an no studs. Everything was closed, it was a Saturday night and SC blue laws used to only allow grocery and hardware stores to be open on Sunday. He JB welded the fan clutch to the face of the pump and let it sit over night. Lasted about an 1/8th of a mile

If those plugs really wanted to leave, I don't think those rivets could've stopped them.
Looks like they were already being kicked around by the timing chain too. |

That's the other pink that stinks! With this level of hacking, it would be VERY wise to do a full dis/reassembly....and score yourself fitycent ! Last edited by STEELCITYFIREBIRD; 09-10-2019 at 02:11 AM. |

Also strange that someone that would know enough to know that they needed to be retained, would retain them in that fashion.

A- C- E- G- You can see what looks like A C E & G on 4 rods which are #1, 3, 5, & 7 starting on the leftmost rod. That's in the correct order of A b C d E f G h. So the rods look fine to me unless I'm reading those letters wrong. |

Except that the rods are on backwards. Those oil holes in the rod should point towards the camshaft. I honestly am not sure how they got all of the pistons in with the rods pressed on backwards.

Wow, Just when you thought you had seen everything.
I disassembled a 455 once to find the thrust bearing on #1 main cap.

Reminds me of a story someone wrote into Hot Rad magazine about....This prospective engine builder marked all his #6 rod caps with a line at the bottom of the six...........so nobody would get it mixed up with a 9...

Once pulled apart a 400 that had 1.66 exhaust valve in 1.77 holes...cam bolt was falling out, all bearings were showing copper and the lifters ticked like hell. Was sold as a "Turn key" ready to run engine.
Another engine had been running hot so decided to replace the core plugs so we could flush the block. Someone had changed the plugs by pushing the old ones into the water jacket along with a small screwdriver. Tons of sediment came out of that one.
