1965 Headers
OK I didn't want to do headers but I am considering it now.
Is there a conservative estimate on what hp you might get? And who makes headers that dont drag the ground. Thanks Greg |

I don't know if tri-Y headers are still available, but they have better ground clearance. There is a guy named Ron Watt that used to make tribal tube tri y headers. I have read that he has delivery difficulties. Buyer beware. As far as HP, what engine? Cam? Etc.

I don't personally know about headers to fit a Pontiac, but the Hedman Hedders on my Chevelle wagon fit incredibly well and are tucked up nice and tight to the underside of the car.

I also vote for Doug's headers. Had a set of ceramic coated ones on my 65 .

If your car is cammed and jetted for tubing headers, expect about a 30 HP increase at 4000 RPM and up. If your car is a street driver, Install the bolt on, leak-free HO cast iron manifolds and be done with it. At normal RPM ranges, they are better than the stock log manifolds, and only slightly inferior to tubing headers.....within 10-15 HP.

I ran the 67 HO/Ram Air Cast Iron Manifolds for several years.
They were made at the time by Classis Reproductions and sold by the Pontiac Vendors. They worked very well, packaged very well, and the only thing I did different vs my stock 64 GTO set-up was to run the Battery Cable differently (close to the block and engine mount vs down thru the battery tube and cast iron stock manifold). They sealed up perfectly and still made good power on the street. Tom V. Mine were NOT the RARE manifolds.

Dyno chart, showing the power I gained from running original log manifolds to a set of Tribal Tube Tri-Y headers. No other changes other than slightly richer metering rods to correct AFR. Very mild very-low compression 455, factory heads, low-lift cam.
It made even more power after I installed a better exhaust behind the headers.

Wow X3. There is a good reason Tribal Tubes got so many orders they couldn't keep up with them and went under. The quality/function of their product is stellar. I would not expect a 45 HP gain and 35 TQ gain out of a set of Hedman's or Doug's, though. YMMV....

^ 50-55tq gain from 4100 to 4500rpm.

But agree, most people will not see quite as big a gain as I did. I said it before, but I was rather shocked at the results myself! I've added 4-tube headers on stock 400's, dyno tested before and after, and only saw a bit over 20hp gains. I did design the cam for use with headers and a good flowing exhaust system. A factory cam designed for the logs will probably not see near the gains. NOTE: I made some pretty detailed threads about the header testing. Anyone wanting more detail should search for the threads I've started, and you should be able to find the info.
