Default Let’s start a who’s exhaust sounds better fight

I was at the Goodguys show in Charlotte today and I stopped by the Pypes trailer. I told him I wanted a 3 inch kit from headers back with no mufflers cause I was providing my own. I have heard too much about the Pypes supplies mufflers having a drone sound. I am looking at the Borla in 3 inch. I want it to sound good at idle and wot and have no drone, just go to sleep when I put it in overdrive. Can anyone recommend a muffler?

i use the pypes race pros with their full 3" x-pipe system & tail pipes & they have very little drone, & what is there is only at a certain rpm well above what a cruise rpm should be with overdrive. i have 3.23 gears & at 65mph im doing about 2600-2700 rpm, the drone happens around 2500 but is not bad at all compared to some ive heard.

one friend has flowmaster 40s on a 462 9.5:1 pontiac with a "mild" cam & 2.5 pipes with an h pipe & full tails, it has very bad drone from about 1800-2500. another friend has ultraflos on a 3" system with no crossover & no tailpipes, its a 600hp 13:1 406 sbc & it has terrible drone from right off idle untill at least 3000, but it runs low 10's on the motor & mid 9's on nitrous... can barely hear yourself yelling in that thing! i used to run 2.5" super turbo knock offs on a mild cam 9:1 455, headers & shop bent pipes with no crossover or tails & it had very bad drone too.

how much drone any given car has depends on many other things like the header size, pipe size, x or h crossovers, location of the mufflers in the system & if you have full tail pipes. so dont dismiss pypes mufflers based on a few bad reviews, many other people like them.

best of luck picking a muffler you like but remember, what one guy likes on his car, another guy will hate on their car... & what one guy considers loud/drone, another guy will consider nice & quiet. it all comes down to personal opinion.

My choice has been Hushpowers by Flomaster.I dont run 3in ever IMO not necessary on a 100% street car.I pulled a set of Hushpowers off my 69 bird as a neighbor remarked how load it was at 5:30 in the AM when I leave for a car show.I replaced with a set of Super turbos and they are a touch more quiet at idle but are loader at 2000-2200 where I drive it on the highway.I run 2 1/2 from the manifolds or headers back over the the rear and out the back.Im getting ready to pull my 455 D port engine with manifolds and replace it with a 434 RAV.The car will go to the header shop for a set of custom build on the car and at that time I will have him put my Hushpowers back on.Also when ever I have used a X pipe I get the drone at about 2000 but it went away with a H pipe in all my applications.FWIW,Tom

I have 3" Dynomax Ultraflow with no cross over. Might be too loud for some, but It sounds good and I have no drone.

Now it is a totally different animal...but my friends 2004 Cobra Mustang with Borla mufflers drones really bad. He likes the sound but man it is loud driving down the highway.

Here is a video with 69 with Flowmaster 10s on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uO9jMkmLokA

I tried 40s and also Pypes Race Pros. For me, the Pypes sounded disgusting.

Without tailpipes on the car it's a pretty big difference. I agree, I don't like the Pypes mufflers without tail pipes. Turning them down at the rearend just doesn't sound that great. In your case and from what I've tried here, the Flowmasters have always sounded better when you terminate the exhaust at the rearend housing. The drone however on my chevelle when I ran it that way was absolutely horrendous, would set off car alarms idling in parking lots, and we had to yell to talk to each other in the car. That's no joke.

The Dynomax Ultraflows are my first choice these days, along with tail pipes. Nice rumble and the sound level isn't obnoxious, especially inside the car where noise levels are toned down enough to carry on a normal conversation with passengers, and I haven't had any drone problems with these mufflers on a couple of different systems, and they wake up a bit when you stand on the throttle, which is fine.

I’m not sure that 3 inch exhaust and quiet belong in the same sentence.

My car is plenty loud now with the exhaust exiting behind the wheels. That’s what I wanted when I built the car - my neighbors know when I get home; that’s for sure.

64speed,
Did you pick out an exhaust system yet? I think I'll be getting paint and body work done this winter and thinking about doing exhaust and suspension as well. I have flowmasters on the car now but not sure what to install.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfoiPqVZk-Q (nice to hear it running without the knocking noise that I had to listen to for 2 years)!

Dougs, X pipe, 3" all the way, magnaflows.

In a contest, somebody with a race car or just someone with too much cam will win. So its not really a fair comparison. But Im a big fan of Magnaflows, both from my own personal experience and pretty much every exhaust dyno test ive ever seen.

Here are some pictures of a 3” system we just put on a 69 gto it’s a Pypes system with dynomax mufflers. It’s still on the lift but will try to get a video when we start it.
