The best sounding to me will NOT have an X pipe, they make a motor sound too tinny to me..

The best sounding motor I ever heard was a 66 GTO with a 421 068 cam, it had a full Douglass exhaust with headers and steel pack mufflers..

Don't know what you mean by tinny?? You mean hollow?

We have X's on everything, some with FLowmaster, Pypes, and straight through shorty race mufflers etc... Nothing sounds tinny by my definition of the word that I'm thinking of. Matter of fact on a couple of these I've switched from "H" to "X" and couldn't tell any real difference in sound... Some are just louder than others thanks to the style or brand of muffler.

I'm 62 and prefer the old sound, a deep, rolling rumble.. These were the only two examples I could find quickly but they illustrate my point. I like these Porter mufflers..

This is as subjective as, "What motor oil is the best?" or "Who makes the best oil filter?" and the latest, "Who makes the best sparkplugs?"...….....…....….

LOL...……

Custom 2-inch headers with full 3-inch exhaust including the tail pipes. With Dr-Gas X-crossover and DynoMax Ultra Flo Welded mufflers.

Cell Phone cameras often do not do justice to exhaust sound recordings.

Here the two electric radiator fans were on adding to the under hood noise. Just before the end of the video they shut off.

That sounds like old glass packs. Cackly

That's okay too. We used to do that too, but as I got older I started looking for stuff more refined, less drone, and less noise overall as the cars became more drivers and just fun track cars.

I had steel pack mufflers on my 64 GTO in the early days.
Pure music going down the road. Not sure how they made that
terrific sound with those mufflers, but I liked it in the 60s.

I had a solid Mackellar #10 cam with M/T roller rockers.

My dead grandmother just passed gas, and it sounded better than anything I have heard here so far!

Its so hard to record car exhaust sounds through the internet. That video does sound tinny...

Motor is a 455, Hooker Header, 2-1/2 pipes (no H or X), through 30-year old Flowmasters and existing 2-1/4 tailpipes.

77 T/A, 400 slightly warmed over. I have RAIII manifolds, Pypes duals, with X pipe. Standard trans am splitters. I used the 'Violator' mufflers. At first I wasn't really thrilled with the sound, it was kinda loud and harsh. I dont know if the system has toned down or I have just gotten used to it, but after a couple of years of use it sounds really good to me now. It has a real nice idle, and can get a bit loud under load. I have 3 sp auto trans, with 2:? rear. Car hits a sweet spot between 50-60mph, sound wise. Nice and quiet at that point and you can actually talk to the passenger! I figured the speed limit in 77 was 55 so I assume that's the reason.

Defiantly the one without the X pipe..

My 462 sounded best with Long Branches, 2-1/2" mandrill pipe from Ram Air Resto and 2-1/2" long Porter steel pack mufflers.. Those mufflers are beautiful and will last the life of the car..
