Default Vintage Grant Steering Wheels, 1965 ??

I have a question about the first offered “Wood” Grant Steering Wheel.

The Grant timeline seems to indicate 1965 was the first wood wheel.

Does anyone have knowledge of this, or possible had one, or still owns one?

Maybe an old Grant catalog from the 60’s would show this ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Chris.

When you say 'wood wheel' are you talking about the one that looks like the Mustang wood wheel,, with the rivets in the holes around the wheel? If so I don't think it went back to 65. I remember those coming out in the late 80's. The only Grant wheels in the 60's are the one's with the holes in the spokes and the multi color metallic covered rims.

Here’s the “Grant timeline” I mentioned which is on their website.

Says first custom WOOD Steering wheel manufactured, 1965.

I’m curious if anyone recollects a mid 60’s wood steering wheel made by Grant.

Absolutely. I put one on my 65. Sorry, no pictures. I was not concerned with pictures at the stage. I have often wondered how you guys even thought about pictures or documentation. Only a couple things on my mind then.. Hammer down..

I remember seeing them in ads in Hot Rod Magazine in the 1960s, you could get them from places like Honest Charley's Speed Shop.

Yes. I have a 1966 or 67 Hot Rod magazine that has an article of a wood-rimmed Grant wheel being installed on a VW Bug. My '65 GTO that I bought in 1982 had a wood Grant wheel on it. I pulled it in 1990 when I found a mint blue deluxe wheel in a junkyard for $30. These were good looking, high quality wheels with real wood (walnut, I suspect) and heavy gauge spokes, with high quality plating. If I found one with a blue sparkle rim I would be tempted to install in in the '65 if I ever install Cragars......LOL

Default Vintage GRANT wood steering wheel

Here’s a Minty walnut wood steering wheel still in it’s Original box.

It’s a flat wheel with no dish. Part number on box is 214. No dates anywhere.

It looks to have been mounted for a short time, as there’s a few small scratches in the center.

The wood is mint with no flaws and the box is pretty nice.

Has anyone seen this style from Grant, or know it’s vintage?

Thanks, Chris.

A few more showing the detail of this cool steering wheel.

Obviously Grant made “wood” steering wheels in the 60’s, not just the metal flake versions.

Nice garage art.

I have one just like it downstairs in my parts collection. NOS never bolted on.
I bought it a long long long time ago.

Tom,

Do you know what model number and year your wheel is?

Let’s see a few photos of this Grant wheel.

Thx, Chris.

Bought one for my '66 in @ 1969, I think from Van Idersteins speed shop, tossed the original (what did we know?) then 20 years ago, sold the Grant, bought a nice used original for '66. Came full circle

Forgot to add. Check eBay for their "1981 Grant Catalog". It will tell you that the 214 is a Classic walnut wood style, 13+" in diameter and 3+" in depth. I don't know where the specific applications would be listed.
