115 lbs. with 8740.....seems like a lot I had problems with the threads on the studs and nuts. I tried to help the problem with different nuts, i use to use the standard 12 point 9/16" head ARP nut but the threads keep messing up, i would have to clean the threads on the studs all the time
7 get new nuts (I'm assuming they were stretching, at that time I couldn't find a better grade stud). So I changed to ARP 12 pointed nuts but with the larger 11/16" head for more thread engagement to help, so when I found a better stud I changed. I will have pics on the nuts later today.

The 2 nuts I’m using (on the right) on my head studs and the old 8740 nut!

Well I’m still waiting on my head gaskets I decided to rewire the front (engine compartment) of the car.......I hate it! I’m just not that type of guy but since I’m adding my fuel level sender gauge I figured it was time well spent!

Well I got my engine in Friday but still no head gasket, they are coming Monday. Before I bolted up convertor to flywheel I had to grind the heads of the (3) - 1/2” grade 9 bolts.....pain in the butt. Clearance between engine diaper and flywheel is almost non-existent, so I need to thin the head of the bolts down.

How much do you torque those bolts to?

That’s a good question! I normally just hit them with my cordless 1/2” impact with blue loctite. I tried looking for the torque numbers for them but couldn’t find it, so I just did the above again. I’ve never had a problem, just wanted to torque them this time.

Grade 9 bolts are good for 180,000 tensile strength same as standard ARP 8740 bolts.

Usual torque is about 35-40 lb ft.

Wouldn’t it matter what size the bolts are?

I show that for a grade 2 (1/2") and around 90 for a grade 8 (1/2"). Chart doesn't have grade 9

Stan Grade 9 is the same as a ARP 8740 bolt......tensil strength.
Actually i think mine would be torque to about 80 lbs. with my impact and 6" extension.

I sent my carbs to APD to get redone so they can flow more fuel, I'm getting them back tomorrow. I also just ordered new jets for them 218 & 226.....talk about BIG! I have 212 jets in the carbs now.

I use grade 8 and 90 sounds about right. FWIW, I would be a little concerned about grinding the heads of the bolts, George.

I’ve been using them this way for at least a decade. I don’t have a choice I have no room between my flywheel and diaper. Right now I have Velcro to keep my diaper close to the oil pan, it (bolts) still rubs. It’s not great but it helps!

If you look at a ARP flywheel bolt the heads are about or the same thickness.

It's the grinding that bothers me, not the thickness----heat, loss of strength, etc.

I'm not getting the picture George. How could an engine diaper be near the head of a flywheel bolt?

"Wouldn’t it matter what size the bolts are?"
Yes, the specs I gave are factory torque/bolt sizes
