I like that hood/shaker design. It looks like something Pontiac could've/should've done - not overstated, cool color combo, makes a subtle connection to its heritage from the 70-72 T/A's. Sweeeettt...!

added the clear to the base? That isn't how it is intended to be sprayed. Did I read that part correct?

maybe should have worded "applied clear over the base".

Exactly my intention.
At first I thought about doing a Macho t/a color scheme but then had the idea about applying the early t/a stripe, then figured hey why not do something that emulates both so I came up with whats in the pics.

How fine a paper did you use? Did you just sand to knock down the orangepeel or a full show sand and buff? The products I saw in the pics are more or less polishing compounds and not true cutting compounds.3M PerfectItIII cutting compound works like magic.Thats a bodyshop supply store item. One thing ALL of you should know Do Not Wax any car just painted for at least 90 days. For those who dont know,if you wax a fresh car it will trap all solvents under it and can lift your new paint right off the car. Those of you who want to try colorsanding, add a couple extra coats of clear to it.So instead of 2-3 make it 3-5 coats. If you cut thru your clear to the base, guess what? You have to reclear that area.

Similar to what I've been developing for my 78's hood. I'm toying w/ the concept of pretty much the same shape around the shaker, but narrowing it as it goes towards the nose to match the hood's angular body lines. Want to take it over onto the nose and V it around and under the Pontiac crest.
Maybe w/ the aforementioned "Macho" touch, taking it staright back from the shaker to the back of the hood, leaving about 2" and wrapping it around the back of the hood onto the top of the doors where the stripe would taper out at the rear of the doors?

You've done a superb job, Larry.

Also very interested in what grit sand paper you used. You got away using just a wool pad an Megyiars #3? No swirls anywhere? Pretty damn impressive.

awesome paint job. Extremly inpsiring. I'm going to be painting my 79 as soon as I get some fiberglass pieces. I was actually thinking of doing something very similar but conitnuing the stripe tastefully over the whole car. A paint job is something I think about for a long time. Again very nice car.

here's what I did.....
The intial orange peel was "lightly" sanded using 600 grit. More or less a process "by me" so that I wouldn't have to spend as much time with the FINAL sanding using 1500 grit.
The 3M "Finesse" was used initially but I could tell it wasn't giving me the results I wanted. Luckily I ran out and by chance found(and used) the Meguires #3 "machine glaze" which as you can see, provided the final gloss.
No swirls under fluorecent lighting but when its in the sun, the pattern from the use of the wool pad is slightly noticable depending on the angle at which you look.
From my past experience, a final application of my "tried and true" Meguires "show car glaze" and a random orbital buffer will remove that.

Finally completed all the exterior details with the installation of the window trim.
On another note, I had to show off the nice straight door panels.

I could only wish my car was anywhere near that straight, but being as I use mine daily and have to park it at school, I'd cry over teh first door ding. Just Wow.

I'll leave the "easier task" of underhood detailing to the next owner. I'm done!
