The red is closest to the engine, about a third of the way back,
at a width of 1 1/2 in. 3/4 in. further back is a 3/4 inch wide white stripe,
and 3/4 inch behind that one is another 3/4 in. wide white stripe.

It is the same if you have automatic transmission. If you have
a manual trans, it is one black and one purple stripe, with the black a third
of the way back, closest to engine and the purple 1 and a half inches behind it. Each stripe one inch wide.

Thought I'd post my color stripes I just found. They seem to vary from what is considered to be correct. Turbo 400, white-red-white stripes. Towards the back of drive shaft.

I'll replace them as they were originally.

Although my "before" picture was taken by 35mm and I don't have a scanner, here is the after picture. After cleaning my driveshaft the original stripes were very easy to see so I know it's bang on for this car (early 1970 Oshawa Judge). Notice my stripes are just ahead of the middle of the shaft, and the distance is the same between the stripes.

Over the last several years I have seen many inconsistancies in the Auto driveshafts for whatever reason. Placement of the stripes on the shaft as well as the distance between the stripes seems to vary.

The colors are also listed in the factoy service manual - i think under drive shaft, It lists the colors and that they were stripes, maybe even the position. Here is the picture of the manual trans.
