Many folks build engines... I'd say that maybe 10% were properly built w/ all the precision machine work and "Perfect Storm" of parts, AND properly tuned. The rest ran good, not great. Until you've experienced the "Great" deal, you have nothing to compare your motoring experience with. When you put a short seat cam in a 10:1 455, and/or a chevy generic 600 cfm holley on the same engine and wonder why the fart piper crowd is out running you from stop lights, AND your engine sounds like pop corn popping...the situation CAN be remedied! Many people here, work on this stuff every day, that know their stuff!!! I've ridden countless cars that ran "pretty good". Years ago I met up w/ a friend that was/is a professional racer/engine builder...crap what a difference. Everything he worked on or built got the most possible out of it's particular combination, whether it was a street car or racer. Folks continually ask questions here, about how to band-aid their poor choice of parts selection, or other crazy things...they want to stretch that gap between good (or a lot of times less than good...) and great, AND IT'S NOT POSSIBLE.They get the proper advice, but it's NOT what they want to hear.

I think these combos run excellent regardless of the numerically low gear or not.
I do believe these combos would benefit immensely from a higher stall convertor. Continental does offer a 4200 that is tight like the Jim Hand Special. |

Thanks.thats pretty cool...Funny story about beer...when Torquewar and I were at St Thomas for the Pontiac Club day...my brother offered me a beer..I'm like well I don't like having a beer if I'm at the track..but what the hell I'm not running for a while again...so I'm half way through my beer..and Torquewar(Andy) gets all pumped hey man we got to do a run together...as I'm sipping my beer I'm like okay take advantage of me..so I chug my beer back fire the car up,we both get in the staging lanes together....I ended up cutting a .05 light and running my fastest et at that time of 11.44....I park the car..Andy is like what the hell man pretty excited how fast I ran.....and my brother says....see BEER makes you faster!

I've got real similar combo, but talking with continental they said min 3.42 gear otherwise would not have enough driveshaft speed to be locked up. Always slipping and making too much heat driving around town. Did you ever have trans temp issues? What trans cooler?
I've had 3.42 & 3.73 gears with 60 series tires in the past and seemed like just spinning motor and burning more gas. Thanks. |

I do quite a bit of putting around town..really no issues. My fluid has never had a burnt smell or a funny colour.I run a 70272 Stacked plate design aluminum B & M tranny cooler too.I've had my convertor for 12 years...4 at the start with 308 gears,6 with 342 gears and now 2 in the new car with 3.08 gears.Replaced the tranny once due to driver error mainly!Ideally... I agree a 342 gear would be recommend as the lowest ratio...you can feel the convertor slip a little more with the 308's but still way better than any of the off the shelf convertors...on the highway at 60 mph it feels super tight and the car loves it.

Torquewar and ta man: Here's one more for you from a fellow Canuck; he's from Burnaby, BC (very close to Chilliwack- SD Performance home). I was in Burnaby on business in 2012- just before I learned about SD Performance on these PY forums . We can say his contribution from Canada cancels out Justin Bieber's (Stratford, Ontario- I was there also on a separate business trip that same year) antics. Bublé is pretty good (hey, he's half Italian) and always has a babe (Thalia, Belinda, and his bride Luisana, etc.) alongside him. He also has some nice cars in his video, See the '69 Judge at beginning at 2:36 below. Enjoy!

It was a very heavy street car night.Little track prep...I made 5 passes which I spun pretty good on 4 of them..60's ranged from 1.91 to a 2.25.On the first two passes I was having shifter issues so my burnouts weren't great and hampered the 60 foot times...On the 2nd pass I spun pretty good and I saw this grey sedan go by near the stripe, his mph on that run was 125mph.Then I found it was a high end Mercedes AMG s 65 v-12 twin turbo rated at a little over 600 hp .....So my next run I was able to line up beside the Benz again..I was able to get a good burnout..launched pretty good..and never saw him..I knew I had a pretty good run...a new best of 11.3893 at 120.63 with a 1.6802 60ftThe next two runs were another spinfest as the track got pretty bad after the sun went down and they were lining us up out of the groove because of all the trucks and daily drivers..Every run was in the 119's other than the 120...The cowl air cleaner seems to work pretty good in the cold..it has never had that mph before, and I've ran in cooler weather.

I run into the same issues, when the air is good and tracks are cool/cold the engine makes more power and there is less traction. So the car will slip some on the launch and worse short times, but still runs good MPH.
If you can bring it all together and hook on the days with better weather you will be rewarded with better runs. It also really helps when possible to run with or follow the "race" cars instead of getting behind a bunch of street tire cars that are digging up the track and leaving oil and water on it. The real cure is to mount up a good set of slicks for those days instead of DOT's......Cliff
