Saw this earlier today. 6 way road test- of course the Pontiac came out on top.

Interesting to look back and see the comments on these cars when they were new.

That's a great road test, but I'm surprised Car And Driver didn't use the excellent cover photo that appeared for this issue.

Funny, I just found that issue along with hundreds and hundreds more.

After the passing of both of my parents, we're cleaning out the family home to get it ready for sale. I still had box after box after box (you get the picture) of 50s and 60s car magazines and car literature up in the garage attic from the time I was a kid.

This is taking forever because I have to stop and read everything looking for something I might be able to throw away. Not much, looks like I'll keep much of this.

Another thing I noticed in this test (and others I looked at) with regards to the road test summary is the 80 - 0 stopping distances. With the better of the stoppers of these six cars, this is still quite competitive. So given the tire technology of the day being as poor as it was back then, these sub 240' 80 - 0 distances are impressive.

Car and Driver does 70 -0 these days so the only comparison is Road and Track with their 80 - 0 distances. If equipped with modern tire compound they wouldn't be bad at all. Of course we'd have other issues such as brake fade and directional stability problems if you had premature lockup with one of the rear brakes which was frequently the case back then.

That's one of my (many) big problems .... disposing of anything. I likely have every issue of Motor Twit, Car and Driver, Road and Track and Hot Rod, Popular Hot Rodding, etc., from about 1956 or 57 up to around 1973 when crash bumpers, poor quality, emissions, big V8s with 130 hp caused me to lose interest for a while.

What I was looking for are the boxes of car literature that I knew I had somewhere. I had a paper route for the Columbus Dispatch starting back in 1956. On the way home on my Schwinn after picking up the papers I was to deliver, I'd frequently hit the local car dealerships on the way to my route and sorta raid their literature racks. And not just for the cheapy, short full line brochure, but for the really fancy PIMPerial, Cadillac and Lincoln, etc brochures.

This is really funny. I just found the January 54 copy of Playboy. That's the 2nd issue. I was 10 1/2. Shame on me!!!!!!!!!!! Margie Harrison!!!!!.

OK, that means that I have the first issue somewhere. I would have hidden it in the car magazines somewhere. No no .... not under my mattress. I was too young at age 10 for those activities!!!
