Greensboro is my hometown, the convention motto was "Come out to the Sticks in 86"

He had it, and a 68 RamAir1 4spd Bronze/Parchment/White BirdVert there.
High Point was just the next town over from GSO, where John lived.

He bought that Turquoise Vert for cheap somewhere - non running - turned out it just needed a new timing chain gear set.
Ran like New again.

In 1987
He wanted 12,500 for the Turq car (ungodly in 1987)
The Bronze Vert was fresh restored and he wanted 10,500 for it.
I thought he had the prices backwards, he said no they were correct.
I had 8k to spend on a dream car (that would buy a helluva car back then) , but that wouldn't do the trick on that car.

By the following weekend both cars had sold.
I have seen the Bronze car a few times afterwards, but never the Turq car.

He wheeled and dealed as a hobby, was VicePres of a Utility Company
Flipped super nice ultra rare muscle cars like coins in a fountain.
He kept the pair of BirdVerts longer than anything else, was real proud of that pair.
<creating a new thread so as not to overly hijack Jeff's>

I found a couple pictures I took of that car from the 86 POCI convention. That was the first POCI convention I went to (of maybe 4 total in my life) -- I was going to school in SW Virginia at the time, and drove down in my 67 400 hardtop to see the show on Saturday.

I didn't see the car in the show field -- it was just parked in the spectator area. Note the black hood tach on it.

As I recall, There were only three convertible top color options in '68: Black, white, and teal (like this one).

Just now saw this
DAMN
Thanks Keith !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was practically a miracle you took pics and could still find them.
The old polaroids don't do it full justice, but they never do.
At least there is something to remind us.

The hood tach was an NOS replacement for the faded out face, non-working original.
He had it painted to match not long after that.

The car had just about every conceivable option - but i can't remember 100% for sure if it had Cruise Control and Disc Brakes - but seems like it did have both iirc.
It was so loaded, it was over-loaded.

Soft-Ray Bird Glass [by pure luck of early build date]
Deluxe Interior
Fold Down rear seat [as pictured]
Deluxe wings-down steering wheel
Deluxe Seatbelts
Tilt
Gauges
Hood Tach
Power Top
Power Seat
Power Windows
Power Antenna
AM-FM
AC
Pwr Steer
Pwr Brakes
Posi
and probably a number of smaller attributes

60,000'ish original miles
original paint etc ...

I 'think' it was probably either a Marketing/Show Car Pool vehicle or Brass Hat Exec car - in retrospect.
Or a civilian that wasn't afraid to spend top dollar

Was the most beautiful car in person i have ever seen.

iirc he either alternated driving the Turq car and the Bronze car on different days to the convention.
Or the Bronze car was displayed on the show field.
He only lived about 20 minutes away from the Convention location held at FourSeasons Mall in GSO.

John Akes of High Point NC was the owner.
Vice President of Nothern Telecom, back then.
He passed away
I 'almost' bought or tried to buy numerous cars he owned over the years, he commanded top dollar or plus premium for his cars.
This Turq car was how i met him originally.

Later on i will try to reflect on some of those too.
I could not swing 12,500 for any car back then, but wish i would have made the math work on that Turq Vert.

The convention was a HUGE success for our local POCI club and we had an abundant treasury for years and years afterwards.

Big Thanks Again, Keith

PY member BetWinner bought his 69 Pattern 4spd Judge from John Akes.
Think that happened in the earlier 80's.
Very very well kept car , all original drivetrain, 1 repaint.
All else extremely nice and mostly untouched car.

Cool that you remember so much about the car and the owner. The car made a big impression on me, too -- that's the only reason I remembered I had pictures of it. For awhile I was planning to repaint my '67 from its faded Signet Gold to Meridian Turquoise ...

Yeah, $12K was for sure a lot of money back in those days. I remember being really interested in a beautiful condition '68 400 HO/4-speed Bronze/White convertible that was for sale in the DC area Want Ads around that time. It was ~$6K, which was the highest price I'd seen anyone ask for a 67/68 in those days. And out of my range...

Yes
To put "some" perspective on those prices for those who may not have been deep into this back then.
He later (maybe 3-4 months later) had a pair of incredible 69 Camaro's.
He did a trade deal for the pair against a brand new 87 TA 5.7 that he bought - and didn't like it. So low miles - almost new.

Both Camaro's were frame off nut and bolt restored.
Never seen any that were any finer at that time.

69 Hardtop RS/SS 396-375hp solid lifter 4spd
Black with Black Deluxe , Tach with Gauges in Console , etc ...
$8900

69 Hardtop RS/Z28 Dual Carb CrossRam / JL8 Rear Discs / Endura / Tach with Gauges in Console, etc....
Orange/ White Stripes/ Houndstooth
$11,900

These were totally immaculate cars with correct X _ _ designators and matching number drivetrains.
Actually worth about twice as much each - as the Triple Turq Bird Vert @ $12,500.
But he was proud of that turquoise car - and found The Right Buyer

And, I made a play for the Black 69 RS/SS BigBlock, was on the fence about the money (he came down to 8500), shuffled my feet after test drive on Sunday, called at lunchtime Monday to go get it.
Already sold to out of state buyer on the phone that morning.
Deposit was already wired in to his bank.

That was a lifetime regret.
The only reason i had 8k in savings was from $5000 insurance settlement for a 69 SS 350 Camaro Black/Black Deluxe 4spd with Tach and Console Gauges that burned beyond recognition in a house fire in carport at my moms house.
