Default 1966 GTO Palmetto Green 19,884 miles Ruth Boehm

Some of you might remember this car when it was featured on the cover of the Legend back in 2001. My friend recently purchased it from Gateway Classics in Scottsdale. He is around the 4th or 5th owner, but it seems like most of the other owners left the car untouched except for adding the ralley wheels, though 2 sets of deluxe hubcaps were in the trunk. 1 set original, and one set either NOS or restored to NOS. Spare looks like it had been on the road. He took delivery of it on Sunday, and three of us took it for a ride. It smelled like 1966 and drove like 1966. Tilt worked like a champ as did power antenna and am-fm. Ac was ice cold. I've posted a few pics. Its had a few repairs, but the original laquer still looks nice. Hood scoop inside is painted black.

Gaps during assembly were not that great on these doors. Way back in 1980, my friend had a 1967 Lemans with the vinyl top, and it had the chrome bead piece inside the drip rail. That was 44 years ago, and that car had 60k miles, but they were still there. This pair looked like new. No yellowing etc.

I don't know who made these custom plates on the console and a/c control heads. This is the original owner's name. She was a single woman and born in 1922 and ordered this for herself- Vinyl top, a/c , tilt, power steering, power brakes, am fm, power antenna, lighting package, deluxe seat belts, mirror package

Original keys with knockouts in place. That funny looking bar is made of a sectioned broom stick. It has magnetic attachments and there are 2. One for each door to avoid door dings. They are painted the original color. I assume that this was the work of the original owner.

T-3 lights in place, ebrake warning light switch. I don't think I knew that the factory vanity mirror was this style without the chrome border that had the PONTIAC letters on it.

Andre,
Congratulations to your friend for acquiring a very nice loaded Survivor ‘66 GTO.

I have a folder of over 60 photos of this car from years ago.
I think the Rally II wheels look terrible on a ‘66. I much prefer the Deluxe Wheel Disc that originally came on the car.

The reproduction trunk mat over the Original mat is not a good look.

Many Original owners of these cars elected to have their name plate on the dash back in the day.

I think the Rally II wheels look terrible on a ‘66. I much prefer the Deluxe Wheel Disc that originally came on the car.

The last owner installed Rally 1 wheels with coker redline tires. The original steel wheels did not come with the car. The last owner passed away, and one of his heirs had the car for sale at Gateway Classics in Arizona. I'd say those wheels are lost forever. My friend is interested in putting the stamped wheels and wheel covers back on the car, but I don't know where he would find a set of 4 with the appropriate build date.. if that is important in 2024

The reproduction trunk mat over the Original mat is not a good look. Before I got there, he had already rolled up the reproduction mat and put it back in the box. The original mat looks fine. Not as good as the rest of the car, but still has the textured feeling of the originals.

Many Original owners of these cars elected to have their name plate on the dash back in the day.
To me it just seems odd, but I hear ya

Last owner also installed new Gardener exhaust system. It looks good, but I suspect the factory exhaust on there was still fine. The new exhaust sticks out like a sore thumb.

I did notice that the spare tire hook is of the longer variety which allows the spare to be mounted face up, and facilitates adding air to it without flipping it over. That piece looked shiny, so I suspect it was changed out.

Last owner bought a set of reproduction emblems. New owner will not install!

Spare tire cover has also been removed and put on the shelf.

An observation on the dash glove box. It wont pop open as it should because the rubber bumpers have compressed permanently and don't offer the springiness needed to push it open. When I studied them, one was like a piece of soft gum, and one retained the original cone shape, so I think that one had been changed out.

Is that palmetto green the same as '67 Linden green?

George

Thanks for pointing out the chrome bead strip that secures the vinyl roof into the roof rail. The Fisher body manual talks about it in the roof cover chapter but I never saw what it looked like. The molding and clip catalog doesn't identify this flexible retainer.

I could use a set of those.... Are there any sources at all out there for them?

I think the chrome bordered mirror was the ‘65 style.

In 1966 the vanity mirror was a rectangle with rounded corners just like your friends car has.

Here is an NOS ‘66 Vanity Mirror I have showing how it mounts to the Sun visor.

Don't know how I missed this thread.
But glad I caught it now.

The lady was slick with a tilt column and a posi.
The magnetic broomsticks are mind-blowers !ˇ!!!!!ˇ!

My grandfather ordered a new 66 T-Bird Town Landau and it came with a gold plated plaque from Ford saying specially built for Mr. X X X on the glovebox area on passenger side.
It was much more official looking.
So that was a thing back then

Thanks Andre and Congrats to your friend .
