Keith, sure. I've known "Bill" for close 25 - 30 years and we've had some great times and bantered each other along the way. Consider this just another jab. He knows he has the finest parts car in the country. He loves being chided, keeps him from mowing the lawn for no reason.

LOL. Thank you; you've reminded me - I need to go mow my lawn.

War eagle, how do you know? This diagram is from the 64 service manual. bill's is 90 degrees off from this. I'm looking to learn here if there's better information.

Ron the alt illustration is the generic one used in ALL of the 1964 up GM service manuals. It took me some time to get used to the 1964 being different than the 65 GTO since I was a chevelle guy also. I am not good at posting pics but will try later. Maybe someone can post from these mags:

Speed Mechanics Nov 64
Motor Sport Jan 64
Car and Driver March 64

I know it shows up in other mags and definitely the plug is in the 9:00 position. I have been in an argument (heated) at Omaha with those judges and basically have given up on them. I think they are still docking using the 6550 fuel pump even if it is dated 64 and in the AC product manual for 64. HA!

Please note how the alts were marked with the Build Sheet code next to the plug.

Ron,

Wow, what an eye. I could have stared at that alternator for days, and not have picked up the difference between it and the alternator shown in the manual.

The problem with manuals (and magazine photos) is that often the picture/diagram/illustration may be taken from/for another model or year, and shown as a representitive reference for the year in question. I have seen the same component/assembly shown differently in different chapters of the same shop manual. Banking on your experience, maintain a critical eye on what you see and read.

1100683 Alternator for 1964

Bill's alternator shown in the photo is correct. Using the Adjusting Lug for a reference at 12:00, the gray plug should be just above 9:00, and the red cable connection at 7:00. What makes this photo confusing is that the photo is turned counterclockwise and you see the red cable coming in, but not the actual connection and the black boot, which is just outside of the photo.

Bill,

I could not make out the script on the backside of the diodes, which I presume have been reconditioned. I typically see dates on the diodes approximately 3 to 4 weeks prior to the date of the alternator. Do you recall the dating on these diodes?

War eagle and Jake64, thanks for the info. Below is a picture of my alternator, clocked with the connector at 12. Because I have power steering, my alternator is above the valve cover, not outboard of it. If I clock this with the connector at 9, the hot lug (with boot), is very close or touching the valve cover. Is it possible that different clock positions were used for manual and PS? Just thinking out loud here. Haven't checked my parts book yet.

No. However I see your problem if the pictures in those three mags are correct. You have too long a belt. The pictures show the belt (belts early double style and single style) brace with only the first 1/8th to 1/4 of the slot used. Yours appears to be locked in the center of the slot. I guess if you have the correct belts it would have to be the wrong pulley somewhere. Kinda makes ya wonder if the 65 12:00 design was for this reason and as belts wore, the center to very end would put the power wire in harms way. OUCH says the chrome v-cover. Those are stock v-covers Ron? Can`t tell for sure from your pic.

Stock valve covers, correct water pump and power steering pulleys and brackets. Repop alternator brackets and belt. I might be able to get the alternator up higher if I pull the PS pump down lower. I think they're both about centered now. Hmmmm. I'm leaving mine this way for now. I'll study more. Now, back to picking apart bill's car...

Ron. Take the alt belt off and have it measured at the pepboy or Orielly. Compare that up with the parts book for length. I would bet the repop is longer than it should be.

My 539208 belt is hard to install. When adjusted, is less than half way on the tensioner.. I have another 539208 and it is so short, I haven't used it. MUST HAVE SSHRUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry I missed out on the posts today. Very interesting stuff. Good eyes RON. While reading and catching up, I was thinking; "HUM, could be". "Bill"!

Jake 64, Almost forgot:
blk diodes; 423 on top, 3G15 in middle, 466 on bottom
red diodes; 360 " " , 3G15 " " , 466 " "

Ron According to the parts book the correct alternator belt is 9776466 3/8 x 50 3/4. Like my car (not yet together so I can`t try belt) your car is P.S. and A/C. The P.S. belt is 9776573 3/8 x 55 1/2. These numbers are for the 2nd type belt system.

Disregard below post. The book is a little hard to decipher the correct belt if one has first design or 2nd design belts. The illustration for belt routing show the alt. w.p. and P.S. as number 538548. This is the 3/8 x 59.

War eagle:

Perhaps I have not interpreted your concern on the alternator position in regards to the valve cover. For power steering cars it looks ok, as typically you will have at least 2/3 of the valve cover positioned outboard of the alternator.

Spent 2 days changing oil. Seems like when I was a kid, it took about 20 minutes. OH WELL. The part that hurt was painting my PF 7.
I know I seem to take a lot of pics. Think I do it because I see other things I wouldn't have noticed other wise.
One point on another thread; GROUNDS: My LH ground is also 4 1/4 in. below the bottom lh bolt on the volt reg and 1/2 in.closer to the centerline. April Pont. car had 29000 when I bought it unmolested. "Bill"!
Almost forgot; Anyone have a stash of the 5/16 by 7/16 carb hold down nuts. I'd like a couple spares JIC.

Don, The nuts are 1/4 in. thick. I think these are special that a vendor made for this application.
