Here is an '73 Olds Omega from April, 1973. It appears to have the Delco logo vented caps. So it appears that the 1973 cars used them, and used the danger decal. I guess I will leave the topper in the GTO the way it is.

Wow! great info!
Magazine ads have at least a 2 month lead time and the people doing the ad may not have the latest product photos. They probably figure most people won't notice anyway.
The vehicle photos are more evidence that 1974 was the start of the gray flame arrestor caps and that the label was used in 1973.

This 1971 dated replacement tar top battery has the same exact DANGER decal as the assembly line 1973-77 batteries do.

Great info indeed. I'll be replacing the battery in the Can Am in the coming week. It has a newer AC-Delco in it now, produced in the late 90's, which finally gave up the ghost and will not take a charge.

Brian, I will keep a look out for a set of the correct charcoal flame arrestor caps for your topper.

Horst,

Any updates on the Danger decal?

Thanks, Rick! I assume this topper fits a group-78 size battery case?

Yup, Brian.

I used an AutoZone 78-DLG. Made in the USA by Johnson Controls.

Here is a closeup of the correct caps. These 4 are in an auction for a damaged R79 NOS Delco battery. The battery is essentially worthless now, and he is missing two caps..

Say, Rick...did your battery come with that yellow lettering on the side of the case, and if so, is it on the non-terminal side or both?

Mine came with that decal on the back side where it can't be seen. The topper covers all of that ugly yellow plastic on those batteries. Make sure they give you the one inch spacer that snaps to the bottom of the battery. This will raise it up to the proper height.

You could put the R89 label on an R89S and no one would know the difference. The artwork to make the 3 labels is done..
It's a new year, and with that.. any updates on these decals, Horst?

Bringing back to the top. Finally ordering my topper tomorrow to get it on in time for the PY show on May 21 and the Pontiacs at the Grove event the following day. Still interested in the correct charcoal colored caps if you guys find them, along with that correct warning decal if it gets reproduced.

I went one step further. I took that old Delco R89W battery I used the charcoal caps from, and I performed some surgery with a saw...

I removed some material from the underside of the top of the battery, and about 2 hours later I ended up with this:

This is the exact same battery used in the Can Am in this article:

This "new and improved" battery "topper" is smooth, and is raised slightly where the caps snap in.

The original Danger decal is legible, but has seen better days. Any interest in reproducing these, Horst?

Compare to my first iteration

The topper that was in the Can Am went to good use. I put the Delco logo vented caps in it, and it went into my Grand Am. This saved me roughly $50.

According to this catalog, the R89W was available in 1977 models. I do believe it was a transistion year for the Delco Freedom with the translucent white case.

Interesting article on the new for 1971 Delco maintenance free battery, as seen in that 1973 455 GTO in the Hi Perf. Cars article..

This 1975 Delco catalog shows the plastic cased R89W just like the one I cut up and made a topper out of.
