Default steering column diagnosing

Working on a 70 trans am. The column in it appears to be 76 up based on the ignition switch I just pulled. I have the (2nd) column loose with car that must be the original. So not having any story line, I need to diagnose what went wrong with original not installed column, and see about a rebuild if necessary.

Who can offer some advice? Car is pretty worn, seats and floor show a lot of miles. I wouldn't be surprised if it was well past 150K.

They appear to match style wise, so the later year was out of a TA most likely. Both have the TA type wheel.

What shop is taking rebuild projects?

Straight column or tilt?

Determining early or late style, the spotwelded on tangs that hold the ribbon harness plug widen in '76 or 77 taking a longer plug. I'd need to check a couple core columns to discern exact model year. Straight floor shif columns are relatively easy to rebuild, with automatic floor shifts being easily changed to manual trans verions with the swap to a small reverse light switch on top of the bottom of the column.

Feel free & ask questions.

How bad did they mess up your electrical to use the '76 ignition switch? A '70 will have a different pull for the flasher.

Auto on console.

I will study the wiring next.

Locksmith ID'd the 76 up. Too easy on 70's to use slide hammer and yank out ignition switch. 76, they updated engineering to a screw retention on the cylinder. But this car would scare a thief, so it wasn't done for theft deterrance.

I bought a rebuilt tilt column for my A-body and F-body from our host. Unfortunately the lower bearings used in rebuild are sloppy and in turn makes the shaft sloppy. No source for the correct, tight-fitting bearing, only the sloppy replacement one.

I did find a company that machines a bear housing that fits in the end and uses a HD sealed bearing. If trying to be 100% correct you may not chose it, but it certainly corrected all my issues.

There are 2 different ones, tilt and non-tilt, make sure you get the correct one.
