Both. The 81 is coming together, slowly. This one is going to be a major undertaking, so I'd like to hold off on totally blowing it apart until the 81 is a little further along.

I hear ya!
The 70 GTO should be coming back from paint in a few months. I think the plan is to get the drivetrain out of the T/A, but keep the car in one piece. Once the GTO comes back, the 70 will be off to body and paint.

Got the drivetrain removed. Initially I hoped the engine would unstick itself, but it really should be rebuilt, so out it comes.
Found a like new Centerforce clutch behind the bell housing. Also found plastic bits, a spring, and a clip at the bottom of the oil pan. Any idea what they came from?

Plastic bits look like they are teeth from the aluminum/plastic timing chain gear that Pontiac installed during the late 60's/early 70's in an attempt to quiet chain noise. The metal parts look like they're from a hydraulic valve lifter.

Probably the safest bet

Could you please measure the overall length of your drive shaft and post the measurement for me. Through the years I have misplaced mine and I’m not sure what one I need for my 70. There must be about 50 to choose from scattered around four buildings here. Thank you.

Thank you. I should have two of them here, the one from the T/A and one from a 70 Z/28 that I unfortunately parted many years ago.

Love those OWL Goodyear Eagle GTs -- great looking tires, and great performing in their day (~30+ years ago). They could probably STILL out corner a brand new BFG Radial T/A .

The shaft is 56" long, from the front of the slip yoke to the back.

beware of tossing original parts such as (assuming it's original) the water pump!
I fluked out be having one on the numbers/date correct engine I acquired, but never came across one in the wild.

I agree on asking for all the old parts. When I did the engine on my 71 trans am a couple of years ago I had Roger (board member "ol pinion head") rebuild my water pump. He did a great job on it for a reasonable price, and the turnaround time was pretty quick as I recall.

I double checked before shipping it off, and it wasn't the original pump. If it was I certainly would have had it rebuilt.

I got the PHS in today. The car was sold out of Steingold Pontiac in Pawtucket, RI. It was ordered with a grand total of 5 options:
Console for $43.68 Code 494 HD Radiator for $10.92 Code 701 Radio P/B for $45.24 Code 401 Floor mats front for $5.07 Code 521 Axle-Performance for $7.30 Code 368 Total cost of the car was $3716.60 Theres two dates on the bottom of the invoice, first is 03-24-70 and the next is 04-23-70. I think that's the date of note, and date of execution? It's very hard to read.

that's interesting that your car has only front mats;
I wonder how often they were ordered solo(?); my car has front and rear mats; I think fro t and rear mats were included with a trunk mat in the custom decor group (or something like that).

What would the Axle Performance option be? I thought the rear axle tube said COX, which would be a 3.55, but maybe it said COZ which is a 3.73?
I need to look at it again.

The transmission was a "free" selection (M20 wide ratio, M21 close ratio, or TH400 auto). But if the M21 was picked, the 3.73 ("performance axle") and heavy duty radiator were mandatory inclusions. My guess is original buyer or dealer that ordered it simply checked the M21 box, and the 3.73 and HD Rad were automatically added to the invoice. Yes, the axle tube should be stamped COZ.
