As I understand it......40959....was just a change-up #....for the 40838....

I'm pretty sure it was listed in the crossover numbers.....back in the days...of parts catalogs...

wasn't a part of this discussion about geting fuel pumps that are resistant to failure from being exposed to ethanol blended fuels?
As I understood it any NOS fuel pump is a ticking time bomb when exposed to ethanol.

I think you will find that driving any 45+ year old car......is just a waiting game....for time bombs to go off...

Whether the parts are new chinese...original.....nos or used...

I'm still running a 25 year old AC pump on my 70 bird and drive it daily, race it, etc... Darn thing still works like a clock. Carry a spare in the trunk, and have been for 3-4 years now just waiting for the day it quits, but it keeps on going. It's had nothing but 10% ethanol running through it.

Have another daily driver running a "no name" pump that comes these days in an AC box. Been 4 years on that one now and works perfectly, and goes to the same gas station.

While we are on this topic.....Has anybody found a supplier....for a "correct"....70-71 F-body...pump to carb fuel line....?

I've bought 3 of them...in the past few years......and they are not bent ...for the correct pump....

Yeah,I know....I can bend it.....but you'd think somebody would have figured it out by now...

I don't use that stuff.

My opinion, Norwood pretty much hit the nail on the head in post 44, and I know I've mentioned this stuff before at some point on this forum.

Since the correct 70-71 large body pumps are elusive, I've moved on to the easier to find large body pumps that are commonly listed as being wrong for the 1970, similar to what Norwood posted back in post 44. But it really doesn't matter.

I bend my own line to mimic the stock line up top, which is all anyone ever sees anyway, and then bend it as necessary down low to work with the large body pumps that are currently available. It's just clocked slightly different and poses no problems at all. Matter of fact most that cared to lay on the ground wouldn't know the difference looking at it.
The rubber lines are cake to deal with for obvious reasons, those connections can move anywhere you want them to be without fuss.
Problem solved. I drive my 70 RAIII Formula daily and don't have to worry about pumps. I can roll into any auto store and buy the current offering and it bolts right on if I need to. But I keep one in the trunk anyway because chances are good you don't usually break down next to an auto parts store.

It dosen’t help the numbers correct crowd but up until 70 the small can pumps were used. I drive my car so I currently in my 70 TA use a readily available 69 GTO pump with the matching pump to carb line.

I'm wondering if anyone has a bulletin showing that the 40838 fuel pump was replaced with the 40959 fuel pump;
My November 1974 printed master parts catalog still calls for Delco 40838 (GM #6470499).

I was looking through one of my AC Delco binders last night when I came across a Delco to NAPA interchange list (obviously added by the gent who previously owned this binder set) - it is five pages worth of cross referance numbers printed in 1983;
It lists both OE fuel pumps, but the 40838 pump has a blank where the NAPA one should be listed - but the 40959 pump has a NAPA part number.

Delco 40959 (?GM #6470727) = NAPA 6441858 (UNITAC)

It's no surprise to me that it looks like this decades old list has a NAPA part number that is no good - but it might help someone who is trying to cross referance old stock parts.

The nearly-NOS pump I bought years ago was a 40959;
The other two I have had are a 40931 (72-75).

In the '71 Firebird assembly manual, it states that the 6440959 was added to the drawing on 5-6-71.

Well, it looks like this Spectra SP1304MP pump is now available through several people on Ebay. Summit still shows it backordered until the 13th of this month, but several places on the web has it available. Has anyone used this pump yet to confirm that it is the correct "big can" pump for the 1970-71 TA'S?
