OK,

Thanks for the info, I didn't know how they worked. I thought it was an automatic deal that dumped the mufflers when it was floored.

They look like a real nice setup.

Well, we get to wait another week. My engine was not available so no sound checks yet today Sunday.
Will provide information as it is available.

We got them done and heard them finally. They sound really good and smooth when closed, loud and rumbly and powerful when open. There is a drastic difference in open and closed. We plan to record them this Saturday.

Here are the numbers, readings on the A scale from 10 feet using a 470 cu. in. Pontiac with 3" front pipes and 2.5" mandrel bent Mustang tailpipes from Dynomax.

1000 rpm, closed 76 dBA, open 83 dBA
3000 rpm, closed 89 dBA, open 97 dBA

More to follow.

'Sounds' like the old days! I'm curious to hear them.

Had a chance to do more data collection today. We were not able to record sounds as the weather is threatening today but here are some more sound levels.
speed, closed(dBA), open(dBA)
800, 76, 80
1500, 81, 90
2200, 84, 93
3100, 90, 99
These sound a bit like Walker's UltraFlos when closed and they sound a lot like very loud UltraFlos when open. They have no real crackling or snarling, just a smooth rumble when open and a very quiet rumble when closed.
Their Sounds may be recorded Sunday.

This is the last one. It shows the MityVac I use to actuate the vacuum diaphragm that pulls them open.

Are there any new developments with these VOE II mufflers?

Actually, I have two more almost complete in my basement right now. We need to weld the end caps on and the bracket for the actuator. After that, sound testing will take place and off they go to a guy in Kansas that has a restored VOE car.

Marauder, my goal has been to build the first issues to test them for sound and then round up a shop/company to do it commercially. Our first try with Stainless Works did not fair as well as it could. Costs were too high and they are one busy shop; they turn out such good things that this small project would not have been economically feasible for them.
The new ones I have are about ready for testing and if they work, another company is potentially interested in the market for them. We shall see soon enough.

Tom,
Makes perfect sense, I admire your tenacity! I think this product will be a success after you work out all of the wrinkles.

regards,
Curt

Tom,

We have a common associate who I have talked to recently. He is doing some work for me now and mentioned your names when I said I was a "closet" Pontiac guy working for Ford.

Hope the pieces eventually make it to a few cars.
(mine being one of them naturally!)

Yep Tom, us Tom's must run the in the same circles .
I am hopeful we can finally TIG these next week and if so, it won't take too long to hear them and ship them away. As soon as I am sure they work, I will get the sample back to the supplier to let them estimate costs and manufacturing potential.

DOM, thank you for the offer. If these sound corect, we shall record them with the same system we used to make the muffler CD and let you know. I will post any data gathered from tests as soon as I have it.
