Default 1971 Gt-37 Build Update

Hello all,

I posted about this car when I originally obtained it a few years ago; not many believed I purchased it for $600. Perhaps it would be more believable if everyone saw it buried in snow with flat tires as I once did.

The car was originally sold in Florida to "Theona McQueen." She purchased the car as a graduation present for her son. Prior to her recent passing (she was in her late 90s), I was able to find her contact information. I think she was as shocked to hear from me about the car as I was to hear the stories. She shared a great deal of history about the car, information which I have written down in efforts to document the car's entire history.

After restoring a set of Rally II's and installing new tires, I drove the car with drum brakes and the original 350/350 drivetrain for a while, enjoying it for what it was. It was fun for a while, but the car has recently been swapped to disc brakes with all new bushings and powder coated components. All new stainless lines were installed from inline tube, and I put in an Olds 3:42 12 bolt (10 bolt ring gear with bolt in axles). I also purchased a tubular trailing arm set from PST; I'm hoping the rear end will hold up to some abuse from my 455/400 combo that will be going in soon. On that note, I've built a '73 455, N crank, KB pistons, Comp 284XE (hoping I won't regret that), 6x-8 heads ported to RAIII specs, RARE oversized manifolds and billet pulleys. Hoping to fire the motor later this week and pull the 350/350 out in the next few weeks. I've got lots to do yet, but it's been a fun adventure thus far. ***NOTE, The Moroso valve covers pictured below will not be staying on the motor. I'm test firing and installing it in the car with donor covers; the pretty covers will go on once it is more sorted out.

As the car sits, it needs quarters on both sides but that's it. The floor pans, rockers, and trunk floor are all in excellent shape; it's certainly impressive for sitting outside in brutal Michigan weather for over a decade. I don't plan to replace the quarters or paint the car any time soon. I've restored my other Pontiac's to near perfection and I'm too careful with them. This is a great driver, and I want to keep it that way for now.

Hope all is well with the PY community.

Fantastic find. I bought my car in 1995 for $700 and built it very similarly to how you are doing this one. When was the wing installed?

I remember this. I am glad you are picking up steam on the project. That is a sharp color combo with the blue stripes on white.

You are gonna let a lot of smoke out of the tires!

I had the GTO wing in my barn for decades. It matched the car's patina perfectly, and I loved the way it looked on the car. I mounted it and haven't regretted it! I'm thinking about mounting a hood tach too. I have spare hoods and deck lids to return to stock down the road.

Cool car, keep us posted.

Funny, my 71 GT-37 is the only 70-72 A-Body I haven't wanted to put a wing on. The white with blue stripe (mine) just looks so clean.

I am not a huge fan of wings, especially on non-Judges, but that one looks right on that car.

Are those 15" Rally IIs? What size tires are on it?

Wink

They're a set of restored yet incorrect JK rims wearing 225/70R15 cooper cobra tires. Hopefully they are still stocked... I have a feeling I will be needing new two rears soon
