Default AC compressor rebuild

The compressor on my all original 86 GP has finally gone bad (it makes a lot of noise but still cools) and I want to keep the car all original so I was wondering how difficult it is to rebuild the compressor. I would like to go that route first but don't see rebuild kits at the auto parts store. Is there a correct replacement?

rebuilds are seldom successful. It is better to get a new compressor. I believe that year is the A4 "Pancake style"

R4 is the compressor on your car. They have a high failure rate. I doubt you can even buy a kit anymore. Buy a reman. duplicate the OE markings and be done with it. Be sure to replace the drier and orifice tube also. Debris from the internal carnage you're hearing [noise] will settle in them.

You could always have NAPA send it in special order to have yours rebuilt if it is in decent enough shape. I did it years ago for people. We used 4 Seasons back then.

I rebuilt several A-6 GM "GTO" Compressors last Jan thru March.
Takes MUCH longer than you would ever figure.
Sure they look good now.

Advanced Auto stocks the Clutch removal tool for ~ $9.
