It doesn't matter if you have 200 miles or 100,000 miles on a well taken care of car. The appearance can look similar after 30 years.

The rust on the diff. is pretty typical of a one month old car.

My 78 T/A looked like that when I took delivery of it with 15 miles on it.

I meant the surface rust on the valley pan, intake manifold, power steering pump, fender bolts....I don't mean to disrespect the car by any means..but maybe better care could have been taken of it.Its a great car but not showroom fresh.

Seeing those pictures reminded me of how poorly the original finishes
held up on the undercarriages and underhoods of these cars. My 79 which was frame off
restored twenty years ago and is driven in nice weather has an undercarriage and underhood
that looks ten times better that that car that has never been driven and has been stored
in a new car showroom. The impressive thing on this car is the perfect original interior.
The paint looks dull and lifeless and the undercarriage is a mess. I'm sure this car is worth
a fortune, but I'd rather have mine. Unless you spent about 100 hours on the engine
compartment and undercarriage and put a nice paint job on it you aren't going to win any Autorama awards with that car.
That being said, if total originality is what pushes your buttons, this car is as good as it gets.

Thanks.

I thought about buying one of these cars. But the prices had gone up so dtink'n much from when I bought my 77, I couldn't justify it, even if I got it at sticker price. I really like the car. Thanks for sharing!!!

Reason I took a pic of the trunk weatherstrip is because at the point it meets is offset and not centered in the middle of the trunk lip.

You might notice the inner fender is removed and the radiator is out. The heater core started to leak and the radiator was just about clogged. We replaced the heater core saved the old one and boiled the radiator. This thing is maybe started once a year. It's a little shocking how these are built from the factory.

What do you mean by that? (can you elaborate a bit)?

I removed the pass side inner fender one of the bolts was cross threaded one was missing. There is a plate located between the core support and inner fender, the drivers side is on the outside and pass side was on the inside. Behind the dash there were some parts not screwed in place and a broken wire. This is the first time we have ever worked on this car in 33 years so I know it was done at the factory. The obvious also is some of the gaps and paint quality.

As many have said about many low mileage cars probably the worse thing to do is never drive them..more problems crop up.I wonder how the inside of the engine looks?

Boy, does that bring back memories.

My first new car was a black 1979, 400, 4 speed WS-6 T/A with camel cloth interior.
Had a lot of fun with that car.
I would love to find it someday, but I bet it's long gone.

The quality of assembly was indeed poor. I bought my 79 new. When I looked it over, I found a lot of sheet metal bolts missing around the front underside of the car. The car had some repair work done at the factory that involved using lead solder at the lower rear wheel opening where the fender turns into the wheel well. I found that out many years later when I had to touch up the paint in this area because it was flaking off. They took a metal rasp to smooth out the repair. It was a terrible finish. The car came without the TRANS AM fender decal due to the rapair in that area. The dealer had to order one. I know this was a factory repair since this was a special order car and I saw it the next day after it was delivered to the dealer prior to it being prepped. I took delivery the next day.

Ah - I understand, and agree.

I've mentioned before, our GTO is original complete with hairs and handprints in the paint. It also has a sheetmetal screw shot right through the main body wiring harness, so that when you turn on the high beams it blows the fuse (it's still like that).

My Chevelle, also bought new, was crashed in the assembly plant. There was bondo in the right front fender the first time we stripped it down.

I guess my pickup is the highest quality vehicle I've ever received but I followed it down the line when it was built

We have had brand new Buicks come in with trunk lids that do not close w/out slamming them. Door jambs with out paint, the id tag missing inside the drivers door. One a few weeks ago with the rear door striker crushed and the rear door would not close all the way. We also had new GMC Yukon damaged by the truck driver so he stopped in another state had it repaired by a bodyshop who did a really bad job getting primer inside the car all over the dash. We had to repair there poor job and repaint the doors.

It would have been nice if someone would have thought to oil up the bare metal parts.

LOL, that where I got my user name. A guy I used to work with told me that these cars went from Trans AM's to trashcans usually within 2 years. I had the choice of my black car or a white one. THe white one may have lasted 3 years, looked like it had been in a demo derby after about 2 years...

Remember around this time is when folks started buying Jap cars, because of the unwonderful quality of American products. American Auto Co's HAD to make improvements because of these things......
