Very cool.

Help me understand, though: how does one put 200 miles on a car if it has never been registered (and therefore street driven)?

Just driving it in and out of the showroom, or on dealership property?

Bet from time to time the dealer threw a D tag on it & then drove it around the block. Years ago, one Sun morning, managed a ride in next to no mile GNX... dealer had not taken title, just a MSO & D tag on the back. Every once & while, showroom floor has to be mopped & waxed might as well fire 'em up drive 'em a mile or two.

Ah - yep. Good point.

I could probably run up a couple hundred miles just driving around in my yard (...but it would take a while...).

Owner did put a dealer plate on and drove it home and back a few times.

There was a pretty low mile W72 10th that was auctioned off last year & I figured that was this one.

Glad to hear it's still there in the showroom.

Can you ask the dealer principle if he will remember to leave it to me in his will?

How about some engine pics???

I saw one sold at auction with 6 miles for $85,000. Here are some engine shots.

Great pics...post more if you have some.

BTW, this is the first '79 W72 car I've seen that does not have the yellow paint spot on the front left head/block.....interesting. While on the subject, anyone know what that paint spot signified? I've heard everything from marking them as '79 (PWH) motors, since they were assembled in late '77, to verifing that head bolts were torqued to spec.

Very cool preservation - but kind of like looking at a tiger in the cage at the zoo.

We may never know for sure.

We use paint dots/splashes all the time for all different kinds of things (as you noted, and including showing rework/repair has been completed, etc).

There is lots of confusion even during the model year in the heat of battle; much more so 40 years later.
