Default Big car tires

The GP could use a new set of shoes---- tires are a bit old. Have been asking around and 225/75-14 just aren't around anymore. I have seen a few big cars with 215/75 and they just look too small. Anyone out there with any leads on an old stash of this size or other ideas? Even Coker can't get them!

Do you need radials?

If not look at the pics of my car from the link in my sig. I really love the look of bias-plys on these old cars. The set on mine came from Coker and are original spec tires.

I really like the handling improvement you get with radials. I had polys on a 63 GP I had some years back-----I thought the car needed a new front end when I first drove it. Had it checked out, everything was good, put the radials on and never looked back. Had them on my Goat as well.

If you want to spend $800.00 per set, you can get American Classics. You can even get them in 235-75R-14.

You could also convert to 15" wheels and get 225-75R-15'S.

Coker still lists a couple radials in that size. http://store.cokertire.com/catalogse...t/?q=225/75R14 They aren't cheap, though.

The American Classics may be best option---can I anticipate any fit issues using 235's?

I have the 235's on my 60 with no issues plus a friend has them on his 64 GP and he said there fit fine.
The 235's are probably around the same size as 8.55-14's.

I had mine delivered to Carlisle and saved a few bucks. The drive very well...for now!

You could also put on a set of 15" Rally II's. Or get a set of 15" steel wheels and use the 69-74 15" spoke hubcaps. They look almost exactly the same as the 14" spoke caps that could have come on your car. The 15" tires are readily available.

I would stay away from the Coker's.

I have 235/70/15 on my 67 GP and have no issues. My car came with H70/15. I bought my tires from Diamond Back Classic Radials. It's a Diamond Back LS5 made by Cooper tire, made in the USA. Think most of Cokers are my down south. Scott

It was 1.5 years ago, so I don't remember. There were 2 suppliers listed in Hemmings that carried these tires, 1 was Coker and it wasn't them. I think it may have been a company in PA or Ohio.

Diamondback did not have what I wanted.

Default Radials on 8-Lugs

Also looking for a set of right size radials for my '67 GP. Can you use the P235/75R14's on 8-Lug wheels? Will these larger tires have a significant drag on performance?

I used Universal Tire because they gave me a better deal than Coker.

I still think that the best bet on a 67-up is to use 15" wheels and either 15" wire wheel covers or 15" Rally II's. That way you can get a good set of 225-75R-15 tires that will last for about $300.00.

That is what I usually use with 8 lugs and they work fine. The 235 75-R14 is about the same diameter as the 855-14 that came from the factory. The speedo on my 60 is just about dead on.

I actually found some 215/75-14 Cooper Trendsetter SE tires, 3/4"WW----$85 each including mounting/balancing at my local tire supplier. 215/75 are less than .6" less in diameter than the 225/75. Can't really notice a difference in the wheel well or speedo.

225/70R14 BFG Silvertowns... it had 225/75R14 whitewalls when I bought it from the original owners son

I did this on my 68 Bonneville wagon and have no regrets. 14 inch tires are slim pickin's now days and the load ratings are not the best for big cars.

My 67 Catalina had clearance issues with 235-75R-15 on the front. Typically when turning tight into an uphill driveway. The wheels were RallyII's off of a 69 Bonneville.

The pic below show my 67 with the RallyII's. I think it was taken in 1992. The gold Catalina is a friends and the blue 65 was my 2+2 with a 3spd on the floor. I miss them both
