Are you positive that wasn’t added by someone for an aftermarket gauge or something? I reviewed the 78 diagram I have and can’t see where else would require a socket let alone one that needs to ground aside from that secondary cluster which you already have a socket for.

Someone’s been in there before apparently though if your lighter illumination wire and shifter wire has been cut.

Was the ash tray fiber optic actually an option on these cars? I dont know for sure but every single 2nd gen firebird Ive owned (almost 50) as well as every one ive seen or been in had that light for the ash tray, just like the cig lighter bulb I think it was standard equipment.

It could have been removed by a prev owner when the bulb went out or other work like a conjured up aftermarket radio etc?

My 77 has a fiber optic for the ashtray. I’ve only owned this car but I’ve only ever seen reference to a fiber optic with regard to later years. Maybe earlier had a bulb? But his is a 79.

Are you saying yours have always had a bulb for the ashtray?

This may not be perfect but may get you closer. This is a pristine dash harness from an '81 Turbo Pace Car i have along with red led radio and other parts.

The cut wire appears to go to the cigarette lighter and is missing a connector. The metal socket goes to the cigarette lighter as well / defrost switch location is my guess.

You can also see the shift bezel light / wire with a black single connector also in the same feed of harness. Hope this helps! Wiring is always a headache.
