Great info here. I'm not having any cooling issues (at the moment), but this is good info to have, especially the right part numbers.

Kevin, I think you might be on to something. Would be totally cool if this solves your problem. Junkyard! I'm getting the junkyard itch. Say the word, and I'm there.

'Fraid I didn't figure anything out. Keith was way on top of this long ago. I did find thr ight water pump on Ebay for $62 bucks though. went ahead and bought it. I want that infra red temp gauge too. they're not too bad. Around $40 bucks. I do hope the pump is the issue. Run out of options otherwise.

Yeah, I'm good for another Junkyard run also. Maybe a few more weeks when the foliage starts to recede? I might could go sooner too if you want, but not in the next couple weeks. Let's get something going!

Hey, How's your GP coming along? Any updates? Progress pics?

Yeah, but just identifying the problem, if that turns out to be it, will be great.

Sent you a PM on the GP.

Not as sexy looking as most and only reads from -27F to +482F, but Harbor Freignt has IR thermometers for $19.95.

I dunno Bill. That price makes it look REAL sexy. So long as it works is all that matters. That temp range does seem a bit limited though. lol

This water pump came off of a '63 421. Notice it only has 3 gussets that extend from the base to the hub. This one fits a '63 389. The part number ends in 677, the rest is hard to read. Didn't see one like this in all of the picture travels. Can someone measure the distance on ones that we agree will work on a V8 from the back of the cast base (that touches the timing cover) to the front edge of the hub? It should be 2 7/8" or 3"

I tried the IR thermometer thing today. Nice day for a drive anyway. Maybe not hot enough to get the full effect and my temp guage didn't get very excited today. But with the IR thermom on both heads and trying to check about the same spot on both sides and stay away from the exhaust ports I saw no essential difference side to side. I'm suspicious of how marginal my cooling may be but today I couldn't say I might have a bad pump.

Default Cardone 58-594 Water Pump

I hope the guys that try to correct their over heating problems report back to this board with what works and what doesn't. I too have water temp issues, especially on high ambient temp days. By the way, Amazon.com has a Cardone 58-594 w/pump available for $63.79 and shipping is free if your have a "Prime" account. Ken

One of the first things I noticed is the bolt holes are all the same. The typical water pump has one bolt hole that's different than the rest. There's one outside edge that's sort of squared off that your's doesn't have. I wonder what the deal is with that. That part number doesn't show in the list pfilean put up either. Hmmm....

I went through this issue with my 64 389 last year. My completely original, factory water pump started leaking. I went through AT LEAST a dozen different water pumps, from different part suppliers (most all were Cardone rebuilds), with different part numbers trying to find the right "direction" pump. I never found it. I even ordered a few on line, and matched the pictures up to what I had. When I got the pump, it was opposite direction, or stamped impeller pump. Eventually, Ron, from this board, sent me a spare pump he had. What a great guy.

Default 4-hole vs 8-hole pumps...

kwt63cat are you referring to the other Cardone water pump discussion thread? If so, those guys are referring to the EIGHT-hole (or possibly 11-hole) pumps... do you have an earlier-production '63 (with the FOUR-hole pump)?

mkoser, yours is the EIGHT-hole pump, correct?

BigAuqua, that pump looks like an aftermarket casting.

I think you're right about it being aftermarket. I've not seen another like it. I found one that I hope works on EBay for $60. It has the andromeda/swirling star pattern. Hope it works.

Again,,,Any 4 bolt pump you get, make sure it has a deep impeller on it for your V8 motors.

Yes, Mine is the 8 hole. I meant to state that, and explain how this is an issue for all of us 'holes.

I have been accused of being an us hole. Eight is enough. Over and out.

We now return you to your otherwise useful discussion thread.

Oh, Mike (BAB), that pump has the right stuff as for impeller vanes!

Default 4 bolt water pump

Engine-ear,
I was referring to those on this thread. I have the original 389 in my Catalina. I had the 4 bolt pump out once for some reason but didn't pay much attention to the impeller.

This is a beautiful thing that you have told me. Typically, I end up buying 2 or 3 or 4 of whatever before I get it right. I appreciate your help with this, A LOT.
