If you use both stud and rocker oiling you may have too much oil to the top of the engine. Also I believe the original 4 speed trans is a long tail shaft model.

Default Engine

After a lot of searching I have found a great machine shop with a great reputation for excellent work.

Taking the block, crank, rods and pistons and heads to him next week.

I have questions on compression ratios. Stock theses have 10.1. Should I try to leave it there? Would I have to run higher octane fuel?

Need input. I have had two machists tell me the piston breakage is poor tuning and or detonation from using lower octane fuels. Because when these engines were build they ran on 100 octane regular gas.

If your going to drive it a lot and dont want to worry about it I would go between 9-9.5 CR with 91-93 gas.Tom

Pulled the crank out today. Cleaned the grease off the block and checked the starter pad holes they are threaded. Threaded a intake manifold bolt into both of them. That good!

Bad side the used flywheel I brought didn't line up with the crank holes.

Block, crank, rods and pistons and heads off to the machine shop Monday.

Jeff,it WILL line up,you just have to keep moving it around the crank register. It will only work one way.Make sure you have the correct flywheel and bell for the block mounted starter.A big car bell and flywheel wont.Tom

The picture of your bell housing if used will require the bellhousing mounted starter and the correct 61-64 big car flywheel.Tom

Flywheel is for a 1964 don't know if big car or Gto.
Bell housing is #9776383 for a Catalina

Have rebuild bell housing mounting starter also

Are their number for the flywheels to check compatibility?

Gonna be watching...I was thinking of converting my 64 GP to a 4 speed. Looked at those fab craft pedals too. Would the Catalina and Grand Prix use the same 4 speed parts...trans ,crossmember, pedals, starter, clutch fork, bell housing ? Thanks

How do you know if it's from a Gto? Any tell tail signs..

I talked to the person I got it from he said it's a 1964 Catalina setup bell housing and flywheel.

This thing is dished on both sides dumb question. How do I tell if I have the correct side up. It's rusty. Is the starter ring closer to the crank?

Most Mt flywheels are only dished on the clutch side that I've seen. I was a r&r man for my dads transmission shop for many years.

Ok measured the hole with my calipers. It's .400 so works out to a 3/8 hole.

Ok everyone I'm feeling a bit stupid right about now. The ring gear is facing toward the rear of the car. It's not close to the crankshaft. There is champer on the side that slides on first. I grabbed the old rotomatic one and matched the holes up then noticed the champer on that one.

Now that that's solved now the ring gear has about two inches of the teeth that looks like they are worn down so look like I'll be changing that before assembly.

Anyone know where I should buy one??
