65-66 Chev vs 65-66 Pontiac tilt interchange
Does anyone have any experience with swapping a column between the two cars listed in my title line?
I know the wiring is a non issue, but how about the mechanical fit? |

I'll bet that you could make it work. Is it a column or floor shift? The Chevy column is probably worth much more than the Pontiac.

Floor shift, although I would be sawing off the shifter of a column shift to convert it.

Are you putting a Chevy column in a Pontiac?

Carl,
I have a couple of Tilt column shift columns if you need one. They are for the USA built pontiac chassis, not the canandian chassis.

I have a Canadian Pontiac, a 66 Grand Parisienne. I owned a different 66 Grande Parisienne years ago, and put a 66 Caprice column in it. It fit fine except I had to do some very minor trimming where the collar meets the dash.
Now I have a 66 Bonneville tilt I want to put into my current Grande Parisienne. A friend was here a few weeks ago with his 66 Grande Parisienne and we compared my Bonneville tilt with his tilt. By eye it all looks like it will work, but I know I've had guys tell me that from 67 and newer, the Chevy tilt (which I know fits Canadian Pontiacs as well) does not fit the US Pontiacs. I hope that is not too confusing! To word it differently, I guess I could also ask if a Canadian Pontiac column fits an American Pontiac, but I don't think there would be a lot of guys on here who would know if it does. |
