I should elaborate on what I'm doing to make it easier to understand. Our Canadian cars came with no optional gauge package, and the cluster used a printed circuit. I snipped the plug off the harness where it clipped in to the printed circuit. I crimped on some factory Packard 56 style connectors and an 8 cavity connector body.

Then I made up a new harness from scratch for the gauge panel and used the mating 8 pin connector body on the cluster.

I stumbled across a Canadian 66 shop manual last night, which I never knew I had. The wiring diagram indicates that the green wire running to the ignition switch is indeed a ground during "crank" which would circuit test the temp gauge when starting in the same way a temp light tests during starting.

Here is a Pic of factory wired '66 gauge cluster. Best size I could get. This appears to be a floor shift harness.

Here's a '65 speedo/harness setup with gauges and 4 speed.

The 3rd pic shows how I removed the pink wire from the ignition switch plug and replaced it with the pink wire that runs to the gauges. A pigtail reconnects the existing pink wire.

The 4th pic show the sending unit connectors. Original oil pressure sending units use a stud and nut. If you have a different style S/U, then change the connector to a spade style connector (something I have to do).

The last pic shows some other unique "add-ons" for the dash harness.
The bulb socket and pressure switch are for the "BRAKE" light. This was an option. I may have been standard with synchromesh cars. Anyway it's a good thing to have with a 4-speed car. The green wires connects another two-wire harness through the firewall and onto a manual trans backup light switch. The small brown jumper wire eliminates the neutral safety switch.

One more thing I did when I converted the dash wire harness. I didn't cut the old idiot light bulb sockets off. I just tied them back. I think I cut the other ends off the engine harness and hid them with harness wrap.

The common wire for the temp and O/P gauge is the PINK wire. That's the one that ties into the ignition switch. The green goes directly to the temp sending unit. So THINK PINK.

Here are some Pics of a floor shift '66 Rally cluster with Tach. Found these recently and thought it might help in the future.
